Concrete Floor Grinding Contractors in Sunbury-on-Thames

K & B Screeding grinds concrete and screed floors in Sunbury-on-Thames as preparation for the next layer, using our own team, diamond tooling and dust extraction. The town has BP's Engineering and Research Centre and Siemens offices. Research and office buildings of that kind, and the offices and hotels by Sunbury Cross, need old adhesive and coatings cleared before a refit. In homes, grinding takes down the lip where a new extension slab meets an older floor. You get a clean, sound surface for compound, screed or flooring.

Grinding office and hotel floors around Sunbury Cross

Think of a diamond grinder as a heavy sander for concrete. Spinning heads set with diamond segments shave the surface down a fraction at a time. That suits anything sitting on or in the surface: high spots, ridges, trowel marks, laitance, leftover glue, paint and thin coatings.

The busier, more urban side of town by Sunbury Cross has shops, offices and hotels. When one of those buildings is refitted and the carpet tiles or vinyl come up, a film of old glue is usually left behind on the slab. New adhesive or compound will not bond reliably to it, so it has to go. Grinding strips it back to clean concrete in one operation, and the same pass takes off painted lines from an old layout.

Research and office buildings such as the Siemens offices set a high bar for what goes underneath a new floor. Whatever the finish, the slab has to be clean and sound first, and grinding is the step that gets it there. Levelling compound or a resin system goes on afterwards. Resin and polished concrete are outside our work, so a resin contractor follows on from our prepared floor.

Grinding concrete releases respirable crystalline silica dust. Every grinder we run is connected to dust extraction, and neighbouring areas are sheeted off, so a business can keep other floors working while one zone is done. Where coatings are thick or the area is very large, shot blasting and other preparation methods may suit better.

Extension joins and garages in Lower Sunbury

Homes need grinding for smaller, more specific reasons. Rear kitchen extensions and wraparounds are common in Lower Sunbury, and the new slab rarely finishes at exactly the height of the 1950s or 60s floor it meets. A ridge of a few millimetres along that line will show through tiles or engineered wood. Grinding takes the high side down so the two floors meet cleanly.

Know the limit before you book. A grinder removes local high points. It cannot correct a floor that slopes from one wall to another or sags in the middle, because cutting the whole floor down to the lowest point would remove far too much. On a floor like that we grind the high spots, then lay compound or a screed over the area, as set out on our Sunbury-on-Thames floor levelling page.

Over-grinding is a risk in its own right. A screed has a minimum depth, and cutting below it weakens the floor, so we measure before deciding how much to take off.

Garages are the other domestic case. A painted or oil stained garage slab needs that coating removed before a conversion floor is built on it. Homes from 2000 to 2014 are 7% of the town, and on slabs that young the usual targets are ridges and laitance rather than old coatings. A cracked or broken slab goes to concrete floor repair first.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Sunbury-on-Thames: your questions

Can grinding level an uneven concrete floor?

Only partly. Grinding removes high spots, ridges and lips, but it cannot fix a floor that falls away or dips across a wide area. For a Sunbury-on-Thames floor like that, we grind the high points and then level with compound or lay a new screed. Cutting a whole floor down to its lowest point would remove too much material and could leave a screed too thin.

Is concrete floor grinding dusty?

Grinding concrete or screed creates fine silica dust, which is harmful to breathe. We only grind with extraction connected to the machine, and we sheet off doorways and adjoining rooms. In a working office near Sunbury Cross or a lived-in house, that keeps the rest of the building usable while we work. The same approach applies to our concrete grinding in Weybridge.

Can I hire a floor grinder from you?

No. We are a screeding contractor, not a hire shop, so no grinders or diamond tooling are sold or hired out. Our own team carries out the grinding as part of preparing a floor, often followed by levelling compound or screed in the same programme. Resin and polished concrete are not part of our work either, though we can prepare a Sunbury floor for the resin contractor who does.
