Grinding slabs on the Great West Road and Chiswick Park
Floor grinding is cutting, not polishing. A machine with diamond segments on a spinning head shaves a slab or screed down in thin passes, so anything sitting on or near the surface goes with it: ridges, trowel marks, the step between two concrete bays, weak laitance, glue, paint and thin coatings.
When an office at Chiswick Park or on the Great West Road is stripped out, the slab left behind can be marked by adhesive, painted around old partitions and slightly proud at bay joints. A raised floor or a thin finish will not sit right on that. Grinding takes those faults out and leaves a clean surface ready for levelling compound for a Hounslow refit or for the flooring itself.
Some clients want a resin coating. We grind and prepare the slab, then the resin specialist takes over; laying resin or polishing concrete is not part of our work. For a large floor or a heavy coating, shot blasting and scarifying are worth comparing, and our floor preparation service covers both.
Elsewhere, apartments and offices are rising on Brentford's former factory land, and Feltham's rebuilt Centre mixes shops and a hotel with homes. On mixed schemes like these, ground floor commercial units often need grinding before the fit-out, especially where a new slab has been left with ridges at its joints.
We are a contractor, not a hire shop: the machines and diamonds stay with our operators and are never sold or rented out.
Extension joins and garage floors across Hounslow, Heston and Isleworth
At home, grinding usually fixes small but awkward things. A rear extension leaves a new slab against an old one, and the two seldom meet exactly. Grinding down the higher side removes the lip, then a thin compound blends the join so flooring runs straight through.
In Hounslow, 10% of homes were built between 2000 and 2014, and floors from that time now meet their first big refit. Lifting carpet or vinyl can leave hard adhesive behind, and grinding takes it off before latex or new flooring goes down. Garages being converted often carry oil marks or floor paint that a new screed cannot bond to, and our garage floor screed guide explains the layers that follow.
There are limits. Grinding takes off high spots; it does not flatten a floor that falls away or sags across a wide area, which needs compound or a new screed after grinding. Over-grinding a screed can leave it thinner than its minimum depth, so depth is checked as we go.
Silica is present in concrete, screed and tile, so grinding gives off fine dust that can be breathed deep into the lungs. We grind only with extraction attached, sheet off doorways and protect neighbouring rooms.
