Heated extensions in Hounslow semis
Semi-detached homes make up 29% of Hounslow's housing, and a heated rear extension or open-plan kitchen is a typical upgrade for houses like these. The pipes go down on insulation, clipped in place, and the screed buries them. Its job is to spread heat evenly, so it must surround every pipe with no air pockets and cover them deeply enough to carry the floor without cracking.
The cover depth depends on the screed. A pumped floor wants 25mm or more sitting above the pipes, which usually adds up to 45 to 50mm. With a hand-laid mix, around 45mm has to go over them, so the whole floor builds up thicker.
In an older house, that depth matters. Some 28% of Hounslow's housing went up between the wars, and retrofitting heating into one of those ground floors means digging out the old concrete. The new floor has to meet the door thresholds, stair and hallway, and liquid screed often fits the height available where sand and cement would not.
The insulation and edge strip underneath are part of the job. Gaps there show up later as cracks or cold spots, and our insulation and membranes service covers checking or supplying them. For access and pump set-up, see the Hounslow liquid screed page. Garden rooms and heated outbuildings follow the same rules on a smaller scale, and their floors are priced the same way.
Commissioning heated floors in Brentford apartments
In a flat, the heated screed sits on an acoustic layer as well as insulation, which adds to the build-up and to the need for tight edge strips. A thin, level liquid screed suits this, and the full depth has to be agreed against the building's finished floor level.
Once poured, the heating becomes part of drying. With calcium sulphate, low heat can normally start around day 7; a sand and cement floor has to sit for three weeks, 21 days, at the very least. After that the water temperature edges up a bit at a time, stays at working level for a while, then drops back before any covering goes down. Going too fast risks cracks.
Joints matter on larger floors. Where heating zones meet or across doorways, a joint lets each zone expand without cracking the next. We fix those positions with the heating engineer ahead of the pour.
