Liquid screed for Walderslade extensions and conversions
The screed comes ready mixed, goes through a hose from the truck and levels itself out once it is on the floor. Nobody has to compact it by hand, so an extension floor in Walderslade can be poured in one visit and walked across after a day or two. It comes in two families, calcium sulphate or cement based, and which one we use depends on the room and on what the specification says.
In Walderslade, the estates that grew after the war suit rear extensions and garage conversions. Across the town, semi-detached houses make up 29% of homes. The new extension floor must finish flush with the house, and because floating liquid screed in a home can be as thin as about 35mm, against 65mm for sand and cement, there is more depth left for insulation.
Flatness is the other gain. SR1 or SR2 is well within reach, so under a 2m straightedge you should find no gap over 3mm or 5mm respectively. That is flat enough for LVT, large tiles and engineered boards without much extra preparation. It barely shrinks, so it needs fewer joints than a hand-laid floor, and a knocked-through kitchen and lounge can go down in one pour.
Poured over heating pipes, it wraps round them without air pockets, and the room heats up more quickly as a result. For how the two main screed types compare on price and drying, read liquid screed vs sand and cement.
Pumping liquid screed into Chatham homes
The pump or mixer truck stays on the road and a hose carries the screed into the room. Before we price, we need to know where it can park, how far the hose must run and whether the route passes through the house or round the side. On the terraced streets towards Luton, that can mean a hose run straight through the hall, so floors and doorways along the way are protected.
If there are steps or a slope between the road and your door, mention it when you ask for a price, because it affects the hose run. Flats and upstairs rooms are reached by taking the hose up the staircase or in through a window.
Drying follows its own timetable. Firm underfoot does not mean dry: flooring has to wait roughly one day for every millimetre up to 40mm, and longer beyond that. The guide to screed drying times sets out why the two differ.
Newer homes at Chatham Maritime are more likely to need levelling than a new screed, which is covered on floor levelling in Chatham. Next door, see liquid screed in Rochester and liquid screed in Gillingham.
