Where pumped liquid screed suits Northfleet floors
Liquid screed earns its place on wide, open floors. It leaves the pump as a flowing mix, finds its own level and closes around pipes and edges without the gaps that can form under a hand-laid screed. It will readily reach SR1 or SR2 flatness, the standard that click flooring and big format tiles ask for.
Some 11% of Northfleet's homes date from 2015 or later, and new houses and flats of that age are frequently drawn up with a flowing screed in mind from day one. Older stock gets it too. A rear extension on an estate at Istead Rise or Shears Green, with the kitchen knocked through into the new room, creates exactly the kind of wide floor that liquid screed covers quickly.
Laid floating on insulation, it normally starts at around 35mm deep in a house and 40mm in a commercial unit. People can cross it on foot after a wait of 24 to 48 hours. It barely shrinks, either, so it needs much less jointing than a hand-laid floor.
The material itself comes in two broad types. Calcium sulphate liquid screeds are common over heating and in large dry rooms, while cement based liquid screeds suit areas that could get wet. Which one suits your floor depends on the room and what is going on top, and we will say which once we know both. Heating going under it? See screed over warm water pipes for how much cover the pipes need and how the system is first brought up to temperature.
Getting the hose into Northfleet houses and flats
Every liquid screed job starts in the street. The truck pulls up as near as it can get, and the hose is run from it, in at the front door and through to the room we are filling. On a house with a drive that takes minutes to set up. On a terraced street, the hose may have to cross a pavement and pass through a hallway, so we protect the route and plan where the truck stands before the day.
Upstairs flats are workable too, and flats make up 24% of Northfleet homes. The hose can climb a stairwell or come in through a window, as long as we know the floor level and the route in advance. Tell us about parking bays, permit zones or a shared entrance when you send the plans.
A floor you can stroll over may still hold far too much water for a fitter. The rule of thumb is a millimetre of depth per day until 40mm, then a slower pace. Our screed drying times guide covers ways to help it along. For a pump-only job where another contractor supplies the material, see our screed pumping service. Immediately east of Northfleet, we also pump liquid floors in Gravesend.
