Which Tilbury floors suit a pumped screed
The material reaches the street already mixed, and a hose carries it onto the insulation, pipes or membrane in the room. It levels under its own weight with light working, so a whole floor is finished in one pour. Hitting SR1 or SR2 is straightforward, and SR1 means a 2m straightedge shows 3mm of daylight underneath at most.
That makes it a natural fit for three kinds of Tilbury job. First, new building: 14% of homes here date from 2000 onwards, and a scheme such as St Chad's, built by Thurrock Council's company Gloriana on a redundant plot, is the kind of build where insulation and liquid screed are laid together. Second, the small rear extension on a terrace or ex-council house, where the new floor needs to meet the existing one exactly. Third, flats, where getting material up to the floor is the hardest part of the job.
It has limits. In a very small room the cost of setting up a pump weighs heavily, and hand-laid screed can make more sense. In a bathroom or wet area a calcium sulphate liquid screed is the wrong material, though a cement based liquid screed is an option. Our comparison of pumped and hand-laid screeds weighs one against the other.
Depth starts from about 35mm when the screed floats over insulation in a home, and 40mm on commercial floors. It hardly shrinks, so a Tilbury floor poured this way gets by with only a handful of the joints a hand-laid one would need.
Pump access on Tilbury terraces and flats
Outside, the pump and mixer wait at the kerb or on a drive while the hose is fed indoors. On a Tilbury terrace without a side passage, that means through the front door and along the hall, with floors and door frames protected. For an upstairs flat we either take the hose up the communal stairs or raise it to a window, whichever the block and its managing agent allow.
It helps to know up front about parking bays and restrictions, which storey the room is on and whether the entrance is shared. With those answers we can plan the pump position before the day rather than on it. The pump comes as part of our service, since we do not hire out pumps or machines on their own, and screed pumping explains how it works.
Once poured, the room stays closed for the first day or so. No flooring goes on until a moisture reading confirms the screed has dried. For how a pumped screed behaves over pipes, read about screed over underfloor heating in Tilbury.
