Concrete Floor Grinding in Tilbury

In Tilbury our team diamond grinds concrete and screed floors to clear high spots, laitance, old glue and paint before the next layer goes down. The town's working floors are an obvious place for it: warehouse and yard floors around the Port of Tilbury, London Distribution Park and the industrial units on Hume Avenue need grinding alongside repair. Homes need it too, where a stripped kitchen floor carries old adhesive or a new extension slab sits proud of the house floor.

Preparing unit floors on Hume Avenue and beyond

Industrial and logistics floors take the heaviest wear in Tilbury. The Port of Tilbury has more than 30 terminals, Tilbury2 handles RoRo traffic and construction materials, and Amazon's fulfilment centre at London Distribution Park is one of the largest in the country. Smaller industrial units on Hume Avenue sit nearby. When a unit changes hands or a floor is due for a new surface, the slab often carries old line paint, worn coatings, adhesive from offices fitted inside the building and lips where pour bays meet.

A diamond grinder works through that in thin passes. Rotating diamond segments cut the surface back to sound concrete, taking down ridges and trowel marks and removing laitance, so a new screed, levelling compound or adhesive can bond. Where a resin floor is planned, the resin installer is another firm; we prepare the slab to the surface texture they specify and leave the coating to them.

Grinding has limits that are worth knowing before work is priced. It does not fix a slab that falls across a whole bay; the high spots are ground and the low areas built up with compound or screed. It is slow on thick coatings or very large areas, where shot blasting or scarifying is quicker, as set out under floor preparation. And broken arrises, spalled patches or cracked slabs need concrete floor repair before any surface work.

We neither sell nor hire out grinders or diamond tooling. The machine comes with our crew, who can also lay the compound or screed that follows.

Grinding in Tilbury homes without the dust

In Tilbury homes, grinding tends to be small and specific. A typical case is a kitchen floor in a terraced or ex-council house: once the old vinyl comes up, the concrete underneath carries a crust of adhesive that new compound will not trust. Grinding strips it back to bare, sound concrete.

Small rear extensions are the other case. Where the new slab or screed finishes a touch higher than the house floor, a grinder takes the lip down so one run of flooring can cross both. If the gap is the other way round, with the extension low, the fix is building up, not grinding.

Silica is the reason we never grind dry. Concrete, screed and old tiles release respirable crystalline silica dust when cut, so the grinder is always connected to an extraction unit. In a terraced house with no back access, the extractor stays in the room being ground, doorways are sheeted, and the hall is protected where the leads run.

One caution applies to every floor: over-grinding a screed can take it below the depth it was designed to have. For a garage being turned into a room, our guide to converting a garage floor explains the build-up after grinding.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Tilbury: your questions

Is concrete grinding the same as shot blasting?

No. Grinding uses diamond segments to shave the surface and is well suited to removing ridges, adhesive, paint and laitance on domestic and smaller commercial floors. Shot blasting fires steel shot at the slab and is quicker on very large areas or thicker coatings. On a Tilbury warehouse or yard floor, the two are sometimes used together.

How much can grinding take off a screed?

Only as much as the screed can spare. Grinding works in thin passes, and every millimetre removed reduces the screed's depth, so a floor laid close to its minimum thickness cannot be cut down far. On a Tilbury extension or kitchen floor we measure the high spots first and grind them only, then fill any low areas with compound.

Can you grind a garage floor before it is converted?

Yes. Garage slabs often carry oil stains, paint and a weak dusty surface, and grinding takes them back to sound concrete so the insulation, membrane and screed or compound sit on a clean base. For a Tilbury garage conversion, we check the slab for cracks and damp at the same visit and price the whole build-up together.
