Grinding slabs for Bluewater store fit-outs
When a shop at Bluewater changes hands or is refitted, the outgoing floor rarely leaves a clean slab behind. Pull up the old vinyl, carpet tiles or timber and you find adhesive in bands, painted areas behind old counters, ridges from earlier patch repairs and fixings cut flush with the floor.
None of that suits a new finish. Primer will not soak through a film of glue, compound laid over paint can debond when the paint lets go, and a raised repair shows through thin shop vinyl. Diamond grinding takes those layers off in controlled passes, back to sound concrete or screed, ready for priming.
The grinding is one step in a sequence. Next may be levelling compound to the flatness class the retailer's flooring contractor asks for, a fresh wearing layer from our commercial screeding service, or a resin system installed by a specialist. We grind and level; we do not lay resin or polished concrete.
New buildings bring their own version of the job. Ebbsfleet Central is planned as a mixed-use quarter around the international station, and as its commercial floors are built and fitted out, new slabs will need laitance, trowel ridges and lips at construction joints taken off before finishes go down.
Fit-out programmes are short, so we plan grinding around the other trades and can work zone by zone. A fixed written price reflects the area, what has to come off and the dust control the site requires.
Swanscombe extensions, garages and silica dust
Houses need grinding too. Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up 16% of Swanscombe's stock, and when houses of that age or older are extended, the join between the new floor and the original one often leaves a lip or a ridge. Grinding takes the high side down so one finish runs across the doorway.
Garages are another. A garage turned into a room may have floor paint, oil stains or a sealer that must come off before insulation or a bonded layer goes down; our garage conversion floor guide shows what follows.
There is a point where grinding stops being the answer. It corrects local high spots; it cannot flatten a floor that slopes or sags across a whole room, and grinding too deep can leave a screed below its minimum depth. Then we grind the peaks and lay compound to bring the room flat.
Grinding concrete, screed or tiles releases silica dust, which is harmful to breathe, so we only grind with extraction on the machine and protect neighbouring rooms. Grinders and diamond tooling are not something we sell or hire out. The same service is available in Dartford.
