Anhydrite Screed in Evesham

For Evesham projects we bring in calcium sulphate flow screed, pump it and finish it to whichever grade the specification names, anywhere between CA-C20-F4 and CA-C30-F6, and use alpha hemihydrate products when speed or a thin section counts. Locally, the key question is where it should not go. This material is sensitive to water, and close to the River Avon a ground floor that may get wet needs a cement based flowing screed instead.

Specifying CA grades for Evesham flats and plots

Every calcium sulphate screed grade has a three-part name. CA means calcium sulphate. After C comes compressive strength, and after F flexural strength, each in N/mm2.

Lightly used domestic floors take CA-C20-F4. Houses, apartments and offices generally get CA-C25-F5. Where use is heavier, specifiers ask for CA-C30-F6. Over-specifying adds cost for no benefit, while under-specifying risks a surface that marks or cracks. When the drawings for a block or a plot name one of these, that is the grade poured, with the bay and joint layout planned in advance.

Purpose-built flats are 14% of Evesham's homes, and apartment floors are a common setting for this material. It pumps easily to upper levels, lays thin over acoustic or thermal insulation, and shrinks so little that long corridors and open-plan flats need few joints.

New houses are the other setting. With 13% of the town's homes built since 2015, plots on recent developments are the sort that often carry a calcium sulphate specification over underfloor heating.

When drying speed or a thinner section is the priority, an alpha hemihydrate product may be picked, and its depth and drying come from that maker's own data sheet. The build-up underneath is prepared by the same K & B team that pours. More on the material itself is in our anhydrite screed guide.

Keeping calcium sulphate dry near the River Avon

Calcium sulphate screed performs well in dry rooms and poorly where water sits. In Evesham, that makes the location of the floor part of the specification. A ground floor in an area with a flood history, a utility room or a wet room should use a cement based flowing screed or traditional sand and cement instead.

Once a calcium sulphate floor is laid, three steps come before the covering. The laitance, a weak skin that forms on the surface as it cures, is sanded off when the screed is dry. Next, a hygrometer reading, because flooring makers often allow less moisture in calcium sulphate than in cement, and that reading, not the calendar, sets the flooring date. Where heating pipes run through it, the system can usually speed drying from about 7 days.

Last comes a primer made to suit calcium sulphate, applied before adhesive or compound touches the floor. If a levelling layer is needed, see levelling Evesham floors. The same specification work is available about 14 miles away as anhydrite screed in Cheltenham.

FAQs

Anhydrite & Flow Screed in Evesham: your questions

Why is anhydrite screed kept out of wet areas?

Calcium sulphate is not the choice for floors that may get wet, so it should not be used in wet rooms, areas prone to spills or ground floors at risk of flooding. Use a cement screed there. Dry rooms in the same building can still use calcium sulphate, so a project may combine the two.

How is anhydrite screed tested before flooring?

We put a hygrometer on it to read how much moisture is left. Flooring makers are often stricter with calcium sulphate than with cement, and the reading has to pass whatever your chosen covering allows. When it is dry, we sand off the laitance and apply a primer suited to calcium sulphate before anything is laid.

Which CA grade suits an Evesham apartment block?

Apartments, like houses and offices, normally take CA-C25-F5. Lightly used domestic floors can go down to CA-C20-F4, and heavier use, for example a busy communal or commercial area, calls for CA-C30-F6. Choosing the grade is for the engineer or architect; our job is to pour what they specified.
