Pumping liquid screed into Hackney flats and blocks
A liquid screed pour starts at the lorry. The mixer feeds the pump, and the hose is run from the street to the room, whether that is a ground floor extension or a flat several storeys up. Stairwells, windows and corridors can all serve as routes, but each needs protecting and keeping clear on the day.
Blocks bring extra steps. Many managing agents set working hours, want common parts protected and ask for notice to residents. Loading on busy streets may need a bay suspension or a permit. Sending photos of the entrance and the route when you ask for a price lets us plan it properly rather than on arrival.
Once the hose is in place, speed is the advantage. A pumped screed can cover a whole flat, or several, in a day. It flows round underfloor heating pipes without voids and reaches SR1 or SR2 flatness without hand finishing, and it shrinks far less than sand and cement, so joints are fewer.
At Woodberry Down, where more than 5,500 new homes are replacing about 2,000 older ones, the new blocks use pumped liquid screed with underfloor heating. For the heating side of that build-up, including pipe cover and first warm-up, see underfloor heating screed in Hackney.
We do not hire out pumps or machines. Where a contractor needs the placing done by a screeding team, see our screed pumping service.
Depth, flatness and drying in Hackney homes
In a home, a floating liquid screed over insulation usually starts from about 35mm, and commercial floors from about 40mm. Over heating pipes, the screed needs at least 25mm above them, for a total of about 45 to 50mm. In a converted flat, where the floor has to finish level with the front door and meet the building's sound requirements, those depths are worked out before anything is ordered.
Both calcium sulphate and cement based liquid screeds are available. The specification, the room and the finish decide which, and a calcium sulphate screed specification brings its own sanding and testing steps.
Walkable is not the same as ready for flooring. Drying runs at about a day per millimetre for the first 40mm and more slowly after that, and good ventilation helps. The screed thickness guide explains how depth and drying time relate.
Liquid screed is less suited to tiny, broken-up rooms and floors that will get wet. There, a sand and cement screed in Hackney is usually the better fit, and the two can be combined in one flat.
