Worn Hastings unit slabs at Ponswood and Castleham
Ponswood sits alongside Castleham and Churchfields, where the council also lets industrial units, and the Stirling Road business centres at Castleham. A unit floor from the 1960s has had decades of wear, spills and repainting, and every new occupier tends to add another layer.
Grinding takes those layers away. A machine fitted with diamond segments turns against the slab and cuts the top off in thin passes. Paint lines, glue from old tiles and weak surface material come off, trowel marks and lips are cut flat and the concrete is opened up so a primer can bond. The aim is a clean, sound surface, not a new floor.
On a worn Ponswood slab, the result decides what follows. If the concrete underneath is sound and close to level, the unit may only need priming and a smoothing layer. If it is cracked or broken, concrete floor repair in the unit comes first. Where the floor needs a stronger top, a new wearing screed goes over the ground surface. Resin, if wanted, is laid by a specialist after us.
Knowing the limits avoids wasted money. Grinding removes local high points but cannot correct a slab that slopes across the unit, and cutting too much from a screed can leave it thinner than its minimum. For large areas or thick coatings, shot blasting or scarifying through our floor preparation service may be quicker.
We agree timing with the occupier so trading or storage can carry on in part of the unit.
Extensions and stripped floors in Hollington and Ore
Extensions and kitchen work are more typical of the post-war and later homes in Hollington and Ore. Where a new extension slab meets the original floor, the two levels rarely match perfectly, and a ridge at the join shows through thin finishes. Grinding takes the high edge down so the join can be primed and smoothed, often with Hastings levelling compound carried across both floors.
Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up 19% of the town's housing, and many floors of that age have had more than one covering by now. Lifting old vinyl or carpet tiles leaves adhesive that a new floor cannot rely on, and grinding takes it back to bare concrete.
Indoor grinding needs care. Concrete, screed and old tiles contain silica, and cutting them creates fine dust that is harmful to breathe. Our grinders run only with an extractor attached at the head. Doors are shut, the rooms around the work are sheeted off and the floor is vacuumed before we go.
Bexhill-on-Sea is about 5 miles along the coast, and the same service is set out on concrete floor grinding in Bexhill-on-Sea.
