Concrete Floor Grinding in Eastbourne

Concrete floor grinding is preparation work, and in Eastbourne our own team does it with diamond heads and dust extraction. It takes down high spots and lips, removes laitance, old adhesive and floor paint, and leaves a clean, sound surface for the next layer. Much of the call for it comes from trade and warehouse floors, and Lottbridge Drove alone takes in about 120 acres of them alongside retail units. We also grind extension joins, garages and floors stripped of old carpet. We do not lay resin or polished concrete, and we do not hire out grinders.

Trade units at Lottbridge Drove and Hammonds Drive

Units in the Lottbridge Drove area, including Hammonds Drive Industrial Estate and the Admiral Retail Park, need hard wearing floors and level bases before each fit out. When a tenant leaves, the slab usually carries the story of the last one: painted walkways, glue from carpet tiles, patches of old screed and ridges where partitions or racking stood.

Grinding deals with that layer by layer. A rotating head set with diamond segments cuts the top of the concrete away in thin passes. High spots come down, trowel marks and lips between bays are cut flat, and paint, adhesive and thin coatings are taken off until clean concrete shows. What is left is an open, sound surface that primer, compound or screed can grip.

It has limits worth knowing before you book. Grinding removes local bumps, but it cannot correct a slab that falls away across the whole unit or dips in a broad hollow. In that case we grind the high points and then level with compound or lay a screed over the lot. On a screed, grinding too deep can leave it thinner than its minimum depth, so we check what the floor is made of first.

When the area is very large or the coating is thick, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker, and our floor preparation service covers both. Cracked or broken concrete is handled under concrete floor repair before any grinding.

After us, the floor is ready for the next trade, whether that is our own levelling, a new screed or resin laid by someone else.

Extension joins and garages in Hampden Park and Langney

A kitchen extension or garage conversion on a Hampden Park or Langney semi or terrace means a new floor butting up to an existing slab. Where the two do not quite line up, a lip of a few millimetres is left at the join. Grinding takes that edge down so the smoothing compound for Eastbourne floors can carry the surface across in one piece.

Garage slabs have their own marks: oil stains, old floor paint and rough patches. Grinding takes those off before insulation, membrane and screed go down, or before a thin finish where the slab is staying.

Only 9% of Eastbourne homes were built since 2000, so most floors under old carpet or vinyl are decades old and many carry layers of adhesive. Grinding strips that back to bare concrete.

Dust is the serious part. Concrete, screed and tiles all contain silica, and cutting them releases fine dust that can damage lungs. Extraction is attached every time we grind, and we close doors, sheet off finished rooms and keep the working area sealed. If a latex screed over the ground floor is the next step, it goes onto a clean, primed surface.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Eastbourne: your questions

Does grinding a concrete floor make a lot of dust?

It would without extraction, which is why we never grind without it. The grinder is connected to an extractor that draws the dust away at the cutting head. Silica dust from concrete and screed is harmful to breathe, so we also seal off the room, protect neighbouring areas and clean down before we leave an Eastbourne home or unit.

Can grinding level a floor that slopes across the room?

No. Grinding removes local high spots, ridges and coatings, but taking enough off to correct a broad slope or dip would weaken the floor and could cut a screed below its safe depth. On a floor like that we grind the bumps, then use levelling compound or a new screed to bring the whole surface into line.

Do you hire out floor grinders and diamond tooling?

No. We are a screeding contractor, not a hire shop, so we do not sell or hire grinders, extractors or diamond tooling. Our own team does the grinding as part of preparing the floor, and the price covers the work and the clean up. If you only need a machine, a tool hire company is the place to go.
