Preparing unit floors on Meridian Industrial Estate
Peacehaven's main business area is Meridian Industrial Estate, by the Meridian Centre and leisure centre, north of the South Coast Road. The estate's small units line Greenwich Way, Newton Road and neighbouring roads. Any unit floor can gather paint, markings or a worn coating over the years, and a change of occupier is a natural moment to deal with it.
Grinding takes those back. Rotating diamond heads remove the surface in thin layers, so we can strip a painted floor, cut back glue left after carpet tiles are lifted in an office area, or remove the dusty laitance on a newer slab. What remains is open, clean concrete, ready for levelling compound, a new screed topping, flooring or a resin system put down by a specialist.
We stop at preparation. Resin and polished concrete are not finishes we lay, and our grinders and tooling stay with our crew rather than being sold or hired. Where a unit needs a new topping, our commercial screeding service covers that side.
Adjoining businesses are part of the plan. Neighbouring units may still be trading while we work, and grinding concrete releases silica dust that is harmful to breathe, so we only grind with extraction connected, seal doors and openings, and agree working times with you. For a very large area or a thick, hard coating, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker, and our floor preparation page explains when.
Old and new floors meeting in Peacehaven houses
Because some early plotland homes were rebuilt bit by bit, a single Peacehaven house may have floors that do not quite meet. Wraparound extensions add more joins. A ridge of a few millimetres where an extension slab meets the original floor is a grinding job: we take the high side down so the two run together under new flooring.
Grinding is not a cure for every difference, though. It removes local high spots; it cannot correct a room that falls from one side to the other or dips over a wide area, and a step of several centimetres is beyond it. In those cases we grind the worst of the high points and then lay compound or a continuous screed. The next step is set out on our Peacehaven floor levelling page.
Screed depth sets a limit too. Taking too much off a screed can leave it thinner than it needs to be, so we check what is there before cutting in.
Garages being converted often have painted or oil stained floors, and those coatings must come off before a new screed can bond. Older floors where carpet or vinyl has just been lifted tend to keep a layer of old adhesive, and grinding removes it cleanly.
