Wraparound extensions and open ground floors in Peacehaven
A wraparound extension runs along the side and back of a house, so its floor turns a corner and joins the old rooms at more than one point. Laid by hand, a floor like that needs several bays and joints. A liquid screed is pumped in, finds its own level and is finished in a single visit, giving one continuous, dense floor.
The same is true after a dormer or loft conversion. Once bedrooms move upstairs, ground floor walls often come out, and the rooms left behind may not share a floor level. Where the old floors are sound and the heights can be brought together, a liquid screed poured over insulation gives one surface; where they are not, the old floors come up first.
Semis make up 30% of Peacehaven's homes, and a semi with a rear or side extension raises the same questions on a smaller scale.
The layers below set the thickness. In a Peacehaven home with insulation under the floor, a floating pour starts at about 35mm; add wet heating and you need 25mm or more of screed over the pipes, so the total is 45 to 50mm, with the mix flowing in around every pipe. SR1 or SR2 regularity comes without much fuss, and because it barely shrinks, the floor needs far fewer joints than a sand and cement one. You can have it as a calcium sulphate mix or a cement based one, depending on the room. For heated floors, see our Peacehaven underfloor heating screed page.
Pumping from the road to a Peacehaven bungalow
Single storey homes are easy to pump into. The mixer and pump stand at the kerb, the hose runs through the front door or along the side of the house, and there are no stairs to climb. We plan the hose route and protect floors and doorways before the pour.
Flats need a little more planning, since the hose has to go up a stairwell or through a window, but the method is the same. Hiring a pump costs £300 to £600 a day on trade2base's June 2026 figures. Ours are not for hire, nor are any of our machines, but our screed pumping page shows how the equipment is used.
Not every house here is old, either: 20% of Peacehaven's homes went up in 2000 or later. Where an extension meets a newer house, the screed depth is set from the existing finished floor level so the two line up at the threshold.
The walkable stage comes quickly, but floor coverings wait for the screed to dry, at roughly a day per millimetre for the first 40mm. Good ventilation and, where fitted, careful use of the heating help. There is more on timings in our screed drying guide.
