Refitting kitchens and bathrooms in Peacehaven bungalows
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up 36% of Peacehaven's housing, and a house of that age may have had its kitchen or bathroom redone before. Each refit can leave something behind: patches where pipes were moved, the ghost of an old vinyl adhesive, a hollow where a unit stood. Under a carpet none of that mattered. Under new sheet vinyl or LVT it all shows.
Latex is made for this job. The cement based powder is wetted with liquid latex rather than water, which gives the set layer some give and a strong grip on the floor beneath. Spread a few millimetres thick, it flows over the marks and dries to a smooth surface for adhesive.
The base still has to be right. Loose material comes off, old adhesive is checked and scraped back where it is weak, and the floor is primed to suit what it is made of. Some well stuck old adhesive can be covered once primed; soft or tacky residue cannot. Firmly bonded ceramic tiles can usually stay too, after cleaning and priming. Where residue or coatings are stubborn, our floor preparation service covers mechanical cleaning before the latex.
Bathrooms bring their own finishes. Slip resistant safety flooring, rubber and lino all need a smooth, sound base, and latex gives them one at very little extra height, so doors and thresholds rarely need trimming. For deeper corrections and the flatness classes behind them, see our Peacehaven floor levelling page.
When latex is the wrong fix in Peacehaven
Latex is a finishing layer. It cannot make a poor floor sound, and three situations in Peacehaven homes call for something else first.
The first is cold, damp concrete. Some older concrete floors in the town were never insulated, and a thin compound does nothing for heat loss or rising damp. We check for moisture before any latex is mixed; if the floor is damp or simply too cold to live with, breaking it out and relaying it is the lasting answer, explained on our Peacehaven sand and cement screed page.
The second is a floor that is well out of level. In a house rebuilt in stages from an early plotland dwelling, one room can sit noticeably higher than the next. A few millimetres of latex cannot bridge a step like that; the rooms need bringing to one level with a new screed run right through.
The third is timber that moves. Springy boards must be fixed down and the floor lined with flooring grade plywood before latex goes on. Pouring it straight onto boards, however flat they look, ends in cracking.
For anything in between, we measure the floor and tell you plainly which of these applies before we price it.
