One heated floor across old and new Peacehaven rooms
A heated floor has to be the same build up from end to end: insulation, pipes, then screed at a set cover. In a Peacehaven house where the original rooms and later additions sit at different heights, that means sorting out the levels before the heating is designed. Sometimes the old floor comes up so that insulation and pipes can run through at one level. On other jobs the new section is built up to match the old one. Either way the decision comes first.
Old concrete floors that were never insulated are the usual obstacle. Heating laid straight on them sends much of its warmth into the ground, so they are normally broken out and replaced, which also gives the height needed for a proper build up.
The cover rules are fixed. Liquid has to clear the pipes by at least 25mm, which normally means 45 to 50mm overall, while sand and cement asks for roughly 45mm on top. Pumped in, a Peacehaven liquid screed surrounds the pipes completely without trapping air, so the room warms faster, and being thinner it often fits where height is short.
Before pouring we make sure there is insulation, a membrane and an edge strip, and fit whichever is missing; what goes under a screed explains each part. Pipe layout and pressure testing are for the heating engineer, since we do not install underfloor heating pipes.
Commissioning heating in newer Peacehaven homes
The newest homes are part of this picture too: 11% of the town's homes date from 2015 or later, and an extension or garden room added to a recent house can usually match an insulated build up, which makes a heated floor simpler to join.
The screed has to dry before it takes full heat, and the timing depends on the material. Calcium sulphate can usually take gentle heat after roughly 7 days, but sand and cement should be left for 21 days at the very least. From then on, commissioning is slow: the temperature goes up a little each day so moisture leaves the floor evenly and no cracks open. Once the pour is finished we leave you that schedule in writing.
The finished floor also has to suit the covering. Tiles, LVT and engineered wood each need a flat, dry base, and the moisture test decides when they go down.
For a heated floor, trade2base put liquid screed at £20 to £35 per m² in June 2026. For the same service a few miles west, see our Brighton and Hove underfloor heating screed page.
