Floors at different levels in rebuilt Peacehaven homes
The first question on a Peacehaven house is how far out the floors are. A kitchen that meets an extension a few millimetres lower, or a hallway that dips where two slabs join, is a levelling job. A step of several centimetres between an old section and a new one is not; that needs a continuous screed across both, and our sand and cement screed page for Peacehaven covers that route.
The compound itself is a thin coat, typically somewhere in the 2mm to 10mm range, and a handful of products can be laid thicker. To check the result, BS 8204 uses a 2m straightedge: a gap of up to 3mm passes SR1, 5mm passes SR2 and 10mm passes SR3. SR1 is the class many thin sheet finishes demand, so LVT and vinyl usually need it, while some tiles and boards accept SR2.
Preparation decides whether it lasts. Under the compound there has to be a firm, clean base, primed to match what it is made of, since concrete, sand and cement, calcium sulphate and old tiles all need different primers. If a floor really needs a screed, piling on compound tends to end in cracks and the layer coming away, and we will tell you when that is the case.
Flats are 17% of Peacehaven's homes, and a flat changing to LVT is a common levelling job on its own. Where the base is almost flat, a thin latex screed of a few millimetres is often all it needs.
Unit and shop refits around Meridian Way
Meridian Industrial Estate sits next to the Meridian Centre and leisure centre, about half a mile north of the A259 South Coast Road, with small industrial units on roads such as Greenwich Way and Newton Road. Units like these, and the shops and offices around the district centre on Meridian Way, need a flat, clean floor whenever a new finish goes down.
The work follows the same order as a home, at a larger scale. Old adhesive, paint and weak surface layers are removed first, because compound will not bond to them; our concrete floor grinding service takes back residues and high spots. Cracks and holes are filled, the base is primed, and the compound is poured and spread.
Time is usually the pressure on a refit. Fast drying compounds let the next trade in quickly, depending on the product and depth. Where a unit floor is badly broken or far out of level, compound is the wrong fix, and we price a screed instead. Resin and polished concrete finishes are not part of what we do, and nor is sanding wooden floors.
