Liquid Screed in Southwick

Southwick extensions, knocked-through kitchens and flats are where we pump liquid screed, putting the whole floor down in one visit so you can walk on it after 24 to 48 hours. In Southwick the obvious use is the rear extension. Plenty of semis here, built between the wars or after 1945, gain a room at the back, and that new floor has to meet the old rooms dead level. A self-levelling screed reaches that height accurately across a large area without the joints a hand-laid floor would need.

Liquid screed for rear extensions on Southwick semis

In Southwick, the floor that suits liquid screed most clearly is a single-storey rear extension: a kitchen, dining and family room in one open space. That is the shape where a pumped screed pays off. It flows out from the hose, levels itself, and sets into a dense, flat floor.

Everything starts from the level of the floor already in the semi. We work back from it to set the depth of insulation and screed, so the new room steps through with no lip at the doorway. Floated over insulation in a house, liquid screed starts at about 35mm. With heating pipes beneath, it must cover them by 25mm or more, which usually makes 45 to 50mm in all, and it pairs naturally with screed over underfloor heating in a new kitchen.

Flatness is the main advantage. Surface regularity to SR1 or SR2 is readily achievable, so LVT, large tiles and engineered boards can go down with little extra preparation. It barely shrinks, so the extension needs only a few joints, far fewer than a cement floor laid by hand.

You can have it as a calcium sulphate mix or a cement based one. Calcium sulphate shrinks very little, while the cement version goes into rooms that could get wet. Once we know which rooms you are doing, we will tell you which to use.

On published 2026 UK figures it costs £24 to £31 per m². For a straight comparison with the traditional method, see the guide to liquid screed vs sand and cement.

Getting the pump to Southwick flats and back gardens

Flats make up 22% of Southwick homes, and an upper floor flat needs a different plan from a house. The pump line may have to run up a stairwell or through a window, and the building's management may set rules about access and protection. Tell us which floor the flat is on and how the hose would get there, and we can price it properly.

For a house, the mixer and pump usually park on the street or the drive. The hose then runs through a side passage, garage or the house to the room at the back. Semis often have a side path, which helps. Terraces may not, so a run through the house, with floors protected, is common.

Once poured, the room stays shut for the next 24 to 48 hours. Light foot traffic is then fine, but drying before flooring takes much longer, at roughly 1 day per mm for the first 40mm and slower after that. Ventilate the room and test before laying anything.

For longer or more awkward hose runs, see our screed pumping service. Just along the coast, see liquid screed in Shoreham-by-Sea.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Southwick: your questions

Can liquid screed match the floor height of my existing house?

Yes, and it does that job well. We set the level from the existing finished floor, then choose the insulation thickness and screed depth to suit. Because liquid screed levels itself, it reaches that height evenly across the whole extension. Tell us the finished flooring thickness too, so the final surfaces line up.

Is liquid screed suitable for a first floor flat in Southwick?

Often, yes, provided the floor structure, acoustic layer and height allow it. The screed is pumped up to the flat, so access and the route for the hose need planning. In an older building, we check what the existing floor is made of before recommending liquid screed or another option.

What surface flatness does liquid screed achieve?

Under BS 8204 it reaches SR1 or SR2 without much difficulty. Lay a 2m straightedge across it and the gap should be 3mm at most for SR1, or 5mm for SR2. Either class suits most tiles, as well as LVT and engineered boards. Some sheet vinyl makers still ask for a thin smoothing coat on top.
