Pumping liquid screed into Free Wharf and Kingston Wharf
On a multi-storey apartment building, liquid screed is pumped from a mixer at ground level through a line that runs up to the floor being poured. Its fluidity is the reason it suits this work. A whole apartment floor can be laid in a day, and the screed settles itself flat around the heating pipes with no voids.
Purpose-built flats are 20% of homes in Shoreham-by-Sea, and new riverside blocks are adding to them. A typical apartment build-up is insulation or an acoustic layer, the heating pipes, then a floating liquid screed. Floating over insulation in a flat, the screed starts at roughly 35mm. Once pipes are in, it needs 25mm or more on top of them, so most of these floors end up around 45 to 50mm deep.
The pump line route is the part to plan in advance. We agree with the site manager where the mixer stands, how the line rises through the building, and which floors are poured in which order. Where the riverside drawings call for calcium sulphate, the grade, laitance and testing are dealt with on our anhydrite page for the town. Cement based flowing screeds are also available where a calcium sulphate product does not suit.
Flatness is the other gain. The finish reaches SR1 or SR2 without much trouble, so tilers and LVT or engineered board fitters have little preparation to do. It also shrinks so little that each apartment needs only a handful of joints, where hand-laid cement would need many more. For runs that need extra length or height, see our screed pumping service.
Liquid screed in extensions away from the River Adur
Houses produce a different kind of liquid screed job. In the semis inland from the river, the usual project is a rear extension or a knocked-through kitchen diner. The new floor is wide and open, so pumping it in one go saves days compared with hand laying.
The tricky detail is height. The new screed has to finish flush with an old suspended timber or concrete floor, so we work back from that level to set the depth of insulation and screed.
On a house, the mixer usually parks on the road or drive and the hose runs through a side passage or the house to the extension. In your enquiry, mention any residents' parking bays, tight side passages or steps along the way.
You can walk on it gently after 24 to 48 hours, but the kitchen diner will not be ready for flooring that soon: allow roughly a day per millimetre for the first 40mm. Published 2026 UK figures for liquid screed run from £24 to £31 per m². Not yet sure it is the right material? Our guide to choosing between liquid and sand and cement screed compares them.
