Industrial floors on Frog Island and in Beaumont Leys
An industrial floor collects layers over the years. Paint for walkways, a coating applied by one tenant and partly worn through by the next, patch repairs, and adhesive under an old office floor all build up. Before anything new can go on, that surface has to be taken back to clean, sound concrete.
Diamond segments on a spinning head shave the surface back a fraction at a time. That clears floor paint, thin coatings, trowel ridges, high points and the weak laitance on top of a newer screed, and it takes down the lips between bays where one pour sits higher than its neighbour. Our team runs its own machines; none of them, and none of the diamond tooling, is offered for sale or hire.
The ground surface then suits whatever follows. That could be a new heavy duty topping, a high strength sand and cement screed, smoothing compound, or a resin system laid by a resin contractor. Resin and polished concrete are not part of our work, so we prepare to the surface texture the next trade asks for.
Grinding is not the only option. On very large areas, or where a coating is thick, shot blasting or scarifying can be faster, and both sit in our shot blasting and preparation service. If removing the surface uncovers cracked or hollow concrete, the next step is repairing the concrete floor rather than covering it up.
Waterside offices, Braunstone extensions and Leicester dust control
Smaller jobs follow the same rules. Offices and research space are planned for Waterside and Space City, and an office fit-out of that kind can involve lifting carpet tile and scraping or grinding the adhesive beneath it before new flooring can bond.
Kitchen extensions and garage conversions are common projects on the post-war semis of Braunstone. An extension slab rarely meets the old floor exactly, and a short lip at the doorway can be ground down so that levelling compound after grinding carries one finish across both. A garage floor may need old paint and oil removed before it is built up for a new room.
There is a ceiling on what grinding can achieve. It deals with high spots, not a room that falls or sags from one wall to the other, and over-grinding a screed can take it below the depth it needs. In that case we grind the peaks and then level or screed.
Dust needs managing at every scale. Cutting concrete and screed throws up fine silica dust that is harmful to breathe, so every grinder we run has extraction attached and adjoining areas are sheeted off, which is especially important in a terrace or an occupied office. Nearby towns are covered too, including floor grinding in Lutterworth.
