Showroom and shop fit-outs at North Farm
North Farm, beside the A21 on the north-eastern edge of town, holds Fountains, Spa, Great Lodge and King Standing retail parks and Tunbridge Wells Shopping Park. Strip the old finish out of a unit there during a refit and the slab beneath is seldom flat enough to take the replacement. Royal Victoria Place, in the centre, raises the same issue for shops there.
BS 8204 sets the flatness classes, using a 2m straightedge laid on the slab. Gaps under it may reach 3mm on an SR1 floor, 5mm on SR2 and 10mm on SR3. SR1 is the class many thin sheet finishes demand, and showroom floors with large-format tiles or LVT usually need something close to it.
The process is simple to describe and exacting to do. We take up old glue and weak layers, repair cracks and holes, then prime with whatever suits the base, be that old tiles, concrete, calcium sulphate or sand and cement. Next the compound is poured, typically somewhere around 2mm to 10mm deep, and worked out to a smooth surface. Fast drying products allow flooring to follow quickly, which keeps a fit-out programme on track.
If a slab is badly worn or has high spots that compound cannot cover, concrete floor grinding takes it back first. Where a new wearing screed is needed across a warehouse, the job becomes a screeding project rather than levelling.
Levelling conversions and older homes in Royal Tunbridge Wells
Flats carved out of older buildings often have uneven concrete floors. Different builders, different decades and patched services all leave their mark. Before LVT or engineered wood goes down, those floors need a primed, sound base and a thin layer of compound.
Then there is the seam between an older house and the extension built onto it. A small step or slope across the opening is enough to spoil wide plank flooring. Levelling compound blends the two floors together.
Where floor heights are fixed by doors and joinery, a thin latex or bonded topping can be the answer, and our latex screed service covers compounds of a few millimetres.
Compound has a limit. Lay it deep in place of a proper screed and it can crack and lose its bond. A floor more than about 10mm out, or one whose base is breaking up, really wants a new sand and cement screed in that room. Timber floor sanding and DIY product sales are not part of our work. We also level floors in Maidstone, about 14.8 miles away.
