Concrete Floor Grinding Contractors in Tring

Tring concrete and screed floors are ground by us with diamond tooling and an extractor on every machine, cutting away ridges, bumps, weak surface skin, old glue and paint so the next layer has something clean to bond to. Our own team does the work as preparation; our machines are not for sale or hire, and resin or polished concrete is left to specialists. Locally that means unit floors at Icknield Way Industrial Estate, including Tring Business Centre, and extensions and garage conversions on post-war and later houses.

Unit floors on Icknield Way Industrial Estate

Warehouse and production units make up much of Icknield Way Industrial Estate, which also holds Tring Business Centre. When one of those units is refitted, the new floor is expected to wear hard and sit at good levels, and none of that can start until the old surface has been dealt with.

An outgoing occupier can leave several problems behind: a painted finish worn through in the aisles, glue left from carpet tiles in an office corner, patches of sealer, bolt holes and ridges where racking once stood. New compound, screed or flooring bonds to the top of whatever is there, so a weak coating means a weak floor.

Grinding works through that from the top down. A heavy machine with rotating diamond segments cuts the surface away in shallow passes, taking coatings and residue with it and exposing sound concrete. Steps at bay joints and old trowel marks wear down at the same time.

Scale changes the method. Grinding suits thin layers, modest areas and local high spots; on a big warehouse floor with a thick coating, shot blasting can be faster. Cracked or broken slabs come first in any plan, through repairs to the concrete itself, and a hard-wearing commercial screed can follow the grind where the refit needs one.

Once clean, the surface is vacuumed and handed on to the next trade, whether that is us laying a screed or compound, or a resin contractor.

Extensions, garages and dust control in Tring

In houses, grinding most often meets a kitchen extension or a garage conversion. Tring's semis and detached houses, many built after the war or between the 1970s and 1990s, often gain one or the other, and while the new slab at the back is laid flat, the old floor it joins may not be. Where they meet, a small ridge is common. Grinding takes it down so tiles or LVT run across without rocking.

What grinding cannot do is lift a low area. It only removes material, so a floor that dips or slopes across the room has its high spots ground and is then brought true with compound or a new screed; self levelling compound in Tring explains that step.

Garage slabs tend to carry oil drips, paint and tyre marks, which are ground off so the membrane and insulation build-up starts on a clean base.

Dust control is not optional. The dust from cutting concrete, screed or tile carries respirable crystalline silica, so no grinder of ours runs without its extractor, sheeting goes up at doorways and living areas stay protected. A screed is never cut back further than it can afford, because going too deep leaves it under its minimum thickness.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Tring: your questions

Can a garage floor be ground before a conversion?

Yes, and it usually should be. Oil, paint, tyre marks and loose surface concrete all weaken the bond of whatever goes on next. Grinding with extraction removes them and exposes clean slab, ready for a membrane, insulation and screed built up to the hallway level of a Tring house. A badly damaged slab may need repair first.

Do you sell or hire floor grinding machines?

No. K & B is a screeding contractor, not a hire shop, and our grinders and diamond tooling are only used by our own team. If you need a Tring floor ground, we price the work itself, including dust extraction and cleaning up, and we can quote for the screed or compound that follows. You get that written price within 24 hours.

Will grinding make my concrete floor shiny like polished concrete?

No. Our grinding is preparation: it leaves a clean, slightly textured surface for a primer, compound, screed or flooring to bond to. Polished concrete is a separate finish made with many further passes using finer tooling, and we do not offer it, nor resin. In Tring our part ends with a prepared floor, which a specialist can then finish.
