Self Levelling Screed and Floor Levelling in Tring

Tring floors that dip, step or slope get a pour of self levelling compound from us, leaving a smooth bed for vinyl, LVT, large tiles or engineered boards. A typical case in Tring is the join where a new kitchen extension or garage conversion meets the original floor, which rarely lines up exactly. Commercially, unit refits on Icknield Way Industrial Estate and at Tring Business Centre need floors laid to good levels as well.

Levelling for unit refits on Icknield Way Industrial Estate

Icknield Way Industrial Estate lies less than a mile from the A41 junction and holds warehouse and production units along with Tring Business Centre. Heygates flour mill is another long-standing industrial site in the town. When a unit or an office suite is refitted, the new floor finish usually asks for more flatness than the old one had.

BS 8204 grades a floor by the biggest gap beneath a 2m straightedge: 3mm or less is SR1, up to 5mm SR2, up to 10mm SR3. SR1 is the class many thin sheet finishes demand, which covers most vinyl and LVT in offices and production areas.

On a sound base, a self levelling compound reaches that standard quickly. Most compounds work in a band of about 2mm to about 10mm, a few go thicker, and they harden quickly enough that a unit refit keeps moving. First, though, old glue, paint and dust come off, and we match the primer to what is underneath, since bare concrete, a cement screed and an anhydrite screed all need their own.

Warehouse floors can be another matter. Where a slab is cracked, broken or badly worn, compound is not a fix, and deep pours to disguise a failing floor can crack and debond. Those floors need concrete floor repair or a new hard-wearing screed first, laid to good levels before any finish goes on.

Where Tring extensions meet the original floor

Semis and detached houses from the post-war years and the 1970s to 1990s often gain an extension, and the join between old and new floors is where levelling is needed. The original floor may have settled or been laid slightly out of level, while the new screed is flat. The result is a lip or a slope along the old back wall, and large-format tiles or click LVT will show it.

Levelling compound blends the two. Each base is primed with its own product, the compound is feathered across the join, and the whole room is brought within tolerance so one finish can run through without a threshold strip.

Some floors need more than that. If an old solid floor is damp, hollow or crumbling, levelling over it will not last, and the better route is a new screed; our sand and cement screed service in Tring covers that. For small, thin repairs before flooring, latex screed may be enough. Sanding floorboards is outside our trade, as is recommending products for DIY.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Tring: your questions

What flatness does a floor need before large tiles?

Large-format tiles need a flat, rigid base, because any dip or lip leaves edges proud and tiles rocking. Tile and adhesive brands typically want the floor in class SR1 or SR2, measured with a 2m straightedge. In a Tring kitchen where an extension meets the original floor, a primed, levelled base is the usual way to get there.

How long does levelling compound take to dry?

Levelling compounds are designed to dry fast, much faster than a screed, which is why they suit a refit with a tight programme. The exact time depends on the product, its depth and the room conditions, so we follow the manufacturer's data sheet and check the floor before flooring goes down in a Tring home or unit.

Can compound fix a floor that slopes badly?

Only up to a point. Most compounds are made for roughly 2mm to 10mm, and only certain products are rated thicker. A floor that is far out of level, or failing underneath, needs a new screed rather than a thick pour of compound, which can crack and lose its bond. We will say which a Tring floor needs before quoting.
