Choosing a screed for Tring houses of every age
Census 2021 recorded 11,961 people living in the Tring built-up area. It is a market town in a gap through the Chiltern Hills that now works largely as a commuter town for London, and its houses are spread across the eras. So before talking materials, we ask two things: roughly when your house was built, and what you are doing to it.
A common floor project in a town with this housing mix is an extension or garage conversion on a semi or detached house built after the war or between the 1970s and 1990s. Whichever it is, the fresh floor must land flush with the boards or tiles already in the house. A large open-plan kitchen suits pumped liquid screed in Tring, which is thinner and flows flat across the room. A single converted garage, raised and insulated to meet the hallway, often suits a hand-laid sand and cement floor.
Heating changes the build-up. If pipes are going into the new room, the screed depth over them is fixed, so read about screeding over wet underfloor heating before the insulation is ordered.
Older homes form a smaller share of the town. Homes built before 1919 often need a failed ground floor dug out and rebuilt by hand, and each one is priced on what lies beneath.
Where a floor is sound but uneven, there may be no need for new screed at all; self levelling compound for Tring floors can bring it flat for tiles, LVT or wood.

Access and timing for screed pours around Tring
We cover the whole town, including New Mill, Little Tring and Wigginton Bottom around the centre, and postcodes here include HP23. Two things need settling before a pour: where the equipment stands, and when the floor goes in.
For a pumped screed, the lorry and pump park within hose reach of a door, and the hose runs through the house to the room. For a hand-laid screed, there must be space for sand, cement and a mixer. A house off a tight lane, or a building fronting the High Street that follows old Akeman Street, may need a different plan, so mention it when you ask for a price.
The pour date sits between other trades. We want the building sealed against Chiltern weather, the plasterer finished, and any heating loops already proven under pressure. Flooring should be booked for when the screed is dry, not when it can be walked on.
Business premises on the edge of town are planned differently. Icknield Way Industrial Estate, less than a mile from the A41 junction, holds warehouse and production units along with Tring Business Centre. Unit refits and warehouse floors there call for hard-wearing screeds laid to good levels, which our commercial screeding service provides.
