Screed for Underfloor Heating in Tring

Once your heating engineer has laid wet loops in a Tring room, we bury them in liquid or sand and cement screed, chosen for the system and the height you have, and hand over a written warm-up plan. Tring's post-war and later twentieth century houses point to kitchen extensions, and a new extension floor is the easiest place to add underfloor heating.

Underfloor heating in new Tring kitchen extensions

An extension floor is designed from scratch, so underfloor heating can be planned into its build-up with no compromise on insulation. The ground is prepared, a membrane and insulation go down, the heating engineer clips and tests the pipes, and then the screed covers them.

How much goes over the loops depends on what you pour. A pumped floor wants 25mm or more on top of them, which typically totals around 45 to 50mm, while a hand-laid mix needs about 45mm above the loops alone and comes out deeper. Where the extension must meet the existing kitchen floor exactly, the thinner liquid build-up usually leaves more room for insulation.

Contact with the loops is the other test. Liquid wraps each one with nothing trapped against it, so warmth travels up without gaps; sand and cement can match that only when it is tamped hard all along every loop.

Three in ten Tring homes, 30%, are semis. Where an extension on one opens into the existing kitchen, the new heated floor and the old unheated one have to finish at the same height, and a final skim across the join may be needed.

Fitting the loops is never part of our work. We check or supply the insulation, membrane and edge strip through our insulation and membranes service, and the thickness guide gives depths for heated floors.

Heating up a new floor in Tring homes

Pour day is not switch-on day. Give an anhydrite floor about 7 days before any warmth; a cement one needs three weeks, 21 days, as a minimum. Your heating engineer then follows our written plan, opening at a cool flow temperature and lifting it a little at a time across several days.

Going to full heat on day one risks a cracked floor, or one that lets go of the loops. Handled gradually, the heating becomes the fastest way to dry a calcium sulphate floor before flooring.

A heated garden room or converted garage is just a smaller version of the same job. Each needs its own insulation and edge strip, and each needs the same patience once the pipes are covered, even when the room is small and the temptation is to switch on early.

Budget-wise, a heated pumped floor runs £20 to £35 per m² going by 2026 published rates. Our page on Tring anhydrite flow screed covers the calcium sulphate grades used over heating, and the same service runs as underfloor heating screed in Hemel Hempstead.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Tring: your questions

Can I tile straight onto a heated screed?

Not straight away. Your tile adhesive brand sets a dryness figure the floor has to reach, and an anhydrite floor also needs its top crust sanded away and a suitable primer rolled on. The heating can help dry the floor once the commissioning schedule allows. For a Tring kitchen extension, a moisture test tells you when tiling can start.

Will underfloor heating raise my Tring extension floor too high?

It should not, if it is planned early. The screed is about 45 to 50mm in total with liquid, or deeper with sand and cement. Because an extension floor is designed from scratch, the insulation and screed can be set so the finished surface meets the existing house. Problems arise when heating is added after the levels are fixed.

Does the heating system need testing before screeding?

Yes. The pipes should be fixed down and pressure tested by your heating engineer before the screed goes on, so any leak is found while the pipes are still visible. K & B lays the screed only, so we agree the pour date with the installer and check the edge strip and membrane on arrival.
