Screed for Underfloor Heating in Hemel Hempstead

Over wet underfloor heating in Hemel Hempstead we lay liquid or sand and cement screed, bury the pipes fully and leave you a written heat-up plan. In a retrofit to one of the post-war new town houses, floor height is fixed, so the pipes, insulation and screed all have to fit into that depth. Your heating engineer fits and tests the pipes, and we come in after that to lay the screed.

Fitting heated floors into Hemel Hempstead's post-war houses

Semi-detached houses make up 23% of homes in the built-up area, and with the terraces of Adeyfield, Bennetts End and Chaulden they form the bulk of the new town. When one of these houses has its old ground floor dug out, it is the ideal moment to add heating, but the finished floor still has to meet the existing thresholds and doors.

That sets the depth. Liquid screed wants at least 25mm sitting over the pipes, so the layer ends up about 45 to 50mm thick. A hand-laid sand and cement layer has to cover them by about 45mm, which pushes the floor higher. In a retrofit where every millimetre counts, the thinner liquid build-up often decides the choice, and the page on pumped liquid screed explains how it flows around the pipes with no air pockets.

Under the pipes sit insulation boards and a membrane, and around the room an edge strip lets the screed expand. We check these before the pour, or supply them; see insulation and membranes for what a sound build-up looks like. Where the digging is shallow, our screed thickness guide shows the minimum depths for each type.

Pipes are pressure tested before the screed goes down, so any leak is found while it can still be reached. It is also worth photographing the pipe layout before the pour, so anyone drilling or fixing into the floor later knows where the circuits run.

Switching on the heating in Leverstock Green and beyond

The most common mistake with a heated floor is turning it up too soon. A calcium sulphate floor can usually take heat about 7 days after it is poured. For sand and cement the wait is 21 days or more. Either way the water temperature is raised gradually over several days and held, not set to full on the first morning, because rapid heating can crack a screed that is still drying.

In newer houses, heating is more likely to be planned in from day one. Of the homes here, 10% were built since 2015, and recent houses and garden rooms are often designed around a heated slab from the outset. Whether the job is in Leverstock Green, Felden, Boxmoor or Corner Hall, the approach is the same: a correct depth, full encapsulation and a slow commissioning schedule, handed over in writing. Keep the room ventilated during those first weeks and avoid covering the floor with boards or rugs, which trap moisture and slow drying unevenly.

If the heated floor is part of a larger job elsewhere in Hertfordshire, we lay underfloor heating screed in Harpenden as well.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Hemel Hempstead: your questions

How deep does screed need to be over underfloor heating pipes?

Liquid screed: no less than 25mm over the tops of the pipes, giving roughly 45 to 50mm in all. Sand and cement: roughly 45mm over them. Going thinner than this risks cracking and uneven heat. In a Hemel Hempstead retrofit we measure the available depth first, then choose the screed that fits it.

When can underfloor heating go on after the screed is laid?

Warming can usually begin after roughly 7 days on calcium sulphate, while sand and cement needs 21 days or longer. Begin on a low setting and step the temperature up a little each day, as laid out in the schedule we leave with you. Running the heating early and gently also helps the floor dry before flooring goes down.

Will K & B fit the underfloor heating pipes too?

No. The pipes are outside our trade. Laying and pressure testing the pipes is your heating engineer's job; once that is done, we check the insulation, membrane and edge strip, put down the screed with full cover and leave you commissioning guidance. Each trade then answers for its own part of the floor.
