Fitting heated floors into Rickmansworth's older rooms
Heating often goes in alongside a new kitchen, and in Rickmansworth that kitchen is often in an inter-war or post-war house. Around 24% of homes here date from 1945 to 1972, a large stock built before modern floor insulation, where heating is now being added during refits.
Height is the hard part in these older rooms, where the original floor level was set long before anyone planned for heating pipes. Under the pipes goes insulation, then the pipes, then enough screed to spread the heat and resist cracking. For a pumped floor, the pipes want 25mm or more sitting over them, so 45 to 50mm is a normal total. A hand-laid mix asks for about 45mm above the loops, which makes the whole floor thicker. In an inter-war kitchen that difference can decide what fits. An extension can be designed around those figures. An existing room cannot, because it has to meet the door thresholds and the rest of the ground floor, and that can mean removing more of the old floor than you expected.
Before we quote, we look at the target finished level, how thick the insulation is and how the pipes are laid out. We can supply and fit insulation, membranes and perimeter edge strip through our insulation and membranes service, or check what your heating installer has already put down.
Where the pipes run under one big open kitchen and dining room, pumped liquid screed over the pipes normally wraps them completely without air pockets, so the system warms up quicker.
First heat-up for Moneyhill and Mill End extensions
Many good screeds are spoiled at the first heat-up. Running the heating flat out on day one dries the top too quickly and can crack it. Commissioning should therefore be slow: start low, raise it by a few degrees at a time over several days, then hold it there before any flooring is laid.
The screed sets the timetable. Calcium sulphate floors can generally take gentle heat a week or so (about 7 days) after pouring. With sand and cement, nothing for at least 21 days. Your heating engineer commissions the system either way, and we leave written guidance matched to the screed we put down. As our guide on how long screed takes to dry explains, days on the calendar only tell part of the story.
On an extension in Moneyhill, Mill End or anywhere else in town, the heated zone often stops at the line of the original house. Setting the screed depth so the two floors finish level saves you a step or a ramp. Bushey, a short way off, has its own page: underfloor heating screed in Bushey.
