Anhydrite Screed in Rickmansworth

Whatever grade your drawings call for, we supply, pump and finish anhydrite (calcium sulphate) flowing screed to it in Rickmansworth. Apartment blocks account for 21% of Rickmansworth homes, and flat floors are where specifiers reach for calcium sulphate most, running it across insulation and heating loops in big open bays. Three things make or break it: picking the grade, sanding off laitance, and proving the floor is dry before anyone lays a finish.

Grades and products for Rickmansworth apartment floors

On a Rickmansworth flat drawing, the anhydrite will be written as a short string of letters and numbers set by the European materials standard for screeds. After CA, the C number tells you how hard it resists crushing and the F number how well it resists bending, both quoted in N/mm2. Almost all housing work uses one of three. Bedrooms and other quiet domestic rooms manage on CA-C20-F4. CA-C25-F5 is the standard pick for most homes, apartments and offices. Shared hallways and similar busy areas in a block move up to CA-C30-F6.

Whoever designed a Rickmansworth block or plot, engineer or architect, picks the grade, and that is what goes in the pump. If a thin section or speed is the priority, the spec may call for an alpha hemihydrate product, which has its own product sheet for minimum depth and drying, and we follow it.

Flats suit the material because it barely shrinks while curing. Wide open areas go down as single bays with few joints, and in an open-plan flat the joints may only be needed at door thresholds or where heating zones meet. Our own team sets out the bays and joints in advance and prepares the whole build-up. Since only 12% of Rickmansworth homes date from 2000 or later, the base under a pour is as likely to be old as new, and any work it needs first falls under our floor preparation service.

Laitance, moisture and primers before Rickmansworth floors are finished

Dry to the touch does not mean ready for flooring with calcium sulphate. Curing leaves a soft film, the laitance, across the top. Glue and compound hold poorly on that film, so once the floor is dry enough we sand it back to firm material. A primer made for calcium sulphate goes on next, since some cement based adhesives react badly with the material.

Then comes moisture. Flooring makers are usually stricter with anhydrite than with cement, so a reading fine for one can fail the other. We take hygrometer readings instead of counting days. Where a block's flats have heating loops in the floor, switching them on gently from about day 7 speeds the drying along.

Water is its weak point. Any Rickmansworth bathroom with a walk-in shower, a full wet room, or a utility space where plumbing might one day leak, is better poured in a cement based flowing screed. The other option there is a hand-laid cement screed for wet areas, which also lets us form falls. The same material is poured nearby as anhydrite flow screed in Amersham.

FAQs

Anhydrite & Flow Screed in Rickmansworth: your questions

Which anhydrite grade should a Rickmansworth flat have?

Most residential specifications name CA-C25-F5, and it is the standard grade for apartments. Quieter rooms can drop to CA-C20-F4, and a block's shared corridors may need CA-C30-F6. In a new block the engineer's drawings decide. Refurbishing an existing flat? We propose one based on the room's use and the finish you have chosen.

Why must laitance be removed from anhydrite screed?

Laitance is the soft, dusty crust left on an anhydrite floor after it cures. Tile adhesive, levelling compound and flooring glue bond to that skin instead of the solid screed below it, so the finish can lift or crack later on. Sanding the skin away when the floor is dry, then applying a compatible primer, leaves a sound surface for the adhesive.

How is anhydrite screed tested before flooring goes down?

We use a hygrometer, which reads the humidity released by the screed under a sealed hood. That figure is checked against the limit from the flooring or adhesive manufacturer, and for calcium sulphate many set a lower limit than for cement screeds. Depth and ventilation alter drying time, so we test instead of going by the number of days.
