Liquid screed for Grove's new homes and Wantage extensions
Liquid screed makes most sense where a floor is large, open and regular. In Wantage that describes two kinds of job. One is new building, such as at Grove, which has grown partly on the former RAF Grove airfield and has a further 2,500 homes planned. The other is the extension or knock-through, where a kitchen, dining and family space becomes one wide floor.
Because it is pumped in and self-levels, a liquid screed spreads across that area in one visit and settles dense and flat. It will normally finish to SR1 or SR2, which is good news if large-format tiles or LVT are going down in the new family room. It hardly shrinks, so a knock-through can go down with only a few joints, and it fills in around underfloor heating pipes without leaving voids. Planning heat under that floor? See screeding over heating pipes in Wantage for cover depths and the warm-up.
Depth is the other gain. Floating over insulation, a liquid screed starts from about 35mm in a home and 40mm in commercial space, well under the 65mm a traditional domestic screed needs. That saved depth can go into insulation, or keep an extension floor flush with the house.
It comes with one of two binders, calcium sulphate or cement, and the room decides which. Being walkable in a day or two does not mean dry, though: read how long screed takes to dry before booking the flooring fitter.
Pump access on Wantage streets and sites
Our hose has to reach from the mixer and pump to the room being poured. On a new plot at Grove the site layout usually allows for that. A semi or detached house with a drive or side access is also straightforward, since the pump can sit off the road. Terraces and upper-floor flats can take more planning, with the pump in the street and the hose run through a hallway or up a stair. Mention parking, loading and how we get in with your enquiry, and we will map the hose route from there.
Before the pour, the room must be weathertight and plastered, with insulation, membrane and edge strip laid and taped so the screed cannot run under the boards. The pump comes with our own crew, and we never hire machines out on their own. Details are on our screed pumping page.
If you are comparing the two main types, liquid versus sand and cement sets out the trade-offs in cost, depth and drying. We also lay liquid screed in Didcot and other nearby towns.
