Choosing a screed for Wantage homes of every age
Census 2021 counted 13,100 people in the Wantage built-up area, and the homes they live in split fairly clearly by age. That split, more than any single street, decides which screed suits.
Post-war housing is the largest older group. Houses of the 1950s and 1960s often have solid ground floors that have settled or cracked over the decades, or rooms being opened up into one kitchen and family space. Once a tired post-war floor has been broken out, we rebuild it from scratch with sand and cement screed trowelled by hand, with insulation and a membrane going underneath this time.
The newer homes are a different job. To the north, Grove has grown so quickly, partly on the former RAF Grove airfield, that it almost merges with the town, and a further 2,500 homes are planned there. New-build floors are commonly designed around insulation and a flowing screed, so a pumped liquid screed is the usual fit. If the drawings for a Grove plot call for a calcium sulphate grade, anhydrite screed in Wantage explains how that changes drying and sanding.
Extensions sit across all ages. Wherever the house is, from Belmont and Charlton to Townsend, a heated kitchen or garden room needs the right cover over the pipes, which our underfloor heating screed page sets out. A sound floor that is merely uneven may need only a thin levelling coat before new flooring.

Timing and access for a Wantage screed
A screed pour sits between trades. The shell should be weathertight, windows and external doors fitted and wet plastering done before we arrive, and any heating pipes laid and pressure tested. Then comes drying time before any finish, which is why the flooring fitter gets booked only once the screed date is fixed.
Pumped screeds need the mixer and pump within reach of the door. Near the market square, or on any older street where parking is tight, let us know how a van and pump could get close when you send the job details, so nothing catches us out on the morning. On a new plot, the site manager can usually set aside a standing area.
Wantage and Grove also have sizeable commercial premises, and their floors need the same planning. Williams Racing has been based at Grove since 1996, Grove Technology Park is in the same village, and a Sainsbury's development in the town began in 2006. Engineering workshops, showrooms and retail units depend on flat, hard-wearing floors, and our commercial screeding page explains how we approach floors in premises of that kind.
