Slab preparation for Waterwells Business Park fit-outs
When a unit or office changes hands, the old floor finish comes up and the slab beneath is rarely clean. Carpet tile adhesive, painted walkways, patches of old screed and worn, dusty concrete are all typical. None of those is a safe base for new adhesive, primer or levelling compound, however good the product.
Diamond grinding cuts through that top layer. The machine's segments take the surface down a fraction at a time, stripping coatings and residue and knocking off high points and lips at construction joints. What remains is firm, open concrete that a primer can soak into.
At Waterwells, or in the new King's Quarter offices around The Forum, a refit floor might end up as carpet tiles, sheet vinyl, a raised access floor or a resin coating. We do the grinding and, where needed, the levelling or screed. Resin, polished concrete and the raised floor itself are laid by other trades. Our commercial screeding service takes over where a slab needs a new topping rather than preparation alone.
Scale changes the method. Grinding suits targeted work and medium sized areas. Across a very large hall, or where a coating is thick, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker, and our floor preparation page covers those. Once the floor and the planned finish are known, we will say which suits.
Old adhesive and extension joins in Gloucester homes
Some 25% of Gloucester's homes were built from 1973 to 1999, and plenty of them are now on their second or third floor covering. Lift a vinyl or carpet that has been down since the house was new and there is often a layer of adhesive fixed to the slab. Ground away, it leaves clean concrete for primer and compound.
Post-war semis account for much of the extension work in the city, and the line between the old floor and the new extension slab is a classic spot for a lip. Grinding takes the high side down. If the old floor then sits lower over a wide area, compound fills the difference, as set out under levelling floors in Gloucester.
Know the limits before booking. Grinding removes local high spots but cannot correct a floor that slopes across a room or dips in the middle. Cut a screed back too far and it ends up below its design depth, which weakens it.
Dust control is not optional. Cutting concrete releases respirable crystalline silica, so every grinder runs with extraction and adjoining rooms are sealed. About 7.7 miles away, concrete floor grinding in Cheltenham covers the same service.
