Industrial floors at Cressex and High Wycombe X
Grinding removes concrete in thin, controlled layers. Diamond segments in rotating heads cut the surface down, coarse grades for coatings and high ground, finer ones to leave an even texture. On a large industrial floor, that covers several tasks with one machine.
It takes off the weak skin, or laitance, that forms on a fresh slab, so primers and screeds bond to sound concrete. It knocks down ridges and lips where bays meet, along with the marks a trowel can leave. It also strips floor paint, worn sealers and line markings when a unit changes hands.
A logistics unit at High Wycombe X or a warehouse near Cressex Business Park might be heading for a resin coating, a high strength screed or new flooring in its offices. Each asks for an open, clean surface, and grinding provides it. Resin is a specialist trade we leave to others, as is polished concrete; our part ends with the prepared slab.
Where a site cannot stop for floor work, grinding is planned in zones, with the extractor and leads kept to the area being cut.
For very large areas or thick coatings, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker, and both sit under floor preparation. Where grinding exposes cracks, spalling or hollow patches, they are dealt with as concrete floor repair before the next layer.
Extension joins and old adhesive in High Wycombe homes
Houses need smaller grinds. Rear and side extensions on High Wycombe's inter-war and post-war semis leave a join where the new slab or screed meets the existing floor, and the two rarely match to the millimetre. A grinder takes the higher edge down so compound can carry both floors into one plane without a hump.
Refits produce the same need. Pull up a carpet or vinyl floor and the concrete beneath often wears a film of old adhesive that new primers will not hold to. Homes built from 2000 to 2014 are 12% of the town, and floors of that age are reaching the point where their first finishes are replaced.
Grinding cannot fix everything. It cuts down local high points but will not correct a floor that falls across the room or sags in the middle, since flattening that by grinding would remove far too much and could leave a screed below its minimum depth. Then we grind the peaks and level or rescreed, as our floor levelling page for High Wycombe explains.
Dust control is fixed practice. Concrete and screed contain silica, and dry cutting releases respirable crystalline silica dust. Our grinders run with extraction at the head, doorways are sheeted and nearby rooms closed off. We are a contractor, so we do not hire out machines or sell tooling.
