Where hand-laid screed still suits High Wycombe homes
Not every floor wants a pump. Some are better mixed in a barrow and laid a bay at a time, and in High Wycombe a few kinds of job fall into that camp regardless of how old the house is.
Shower rooms and wet rooms lead the list. Walk-in showers with no tray rely on the floor dropping towards the drain, and a barrow-mixed screed can be trowelled to that fall. Calcium sulphate is unsuitable anywhere a floor may get wet, so cement is the material for these rooms in any case.
Garage conversions follow. An old garage slab normally sits below the house floor, and with insulation and a membrane down, screed raises it to meet the hallway. Each layer is explained in the garage conversion floor guide on our site.
Older houses make up the third group. Terraced homes are 14% of the town, and older terraces tend to have small rooms off a narrow hall, which suits screed carried in and laid one room at a time. When an old floor is dug out and rebuilt, the new screed goes onto fresh insulation and a membrane, and each room can have its own depth.
You can also change the mix. Fibres add between £1 and £3 to each m² and lower the risk of cracking; when they are worth it is covered under fibre reinforced screed.
Bonded or floating screed in a High Wycombe extension
Extending a semi means a new slab from the builder, and the screed over it brings the floor up to the existing level. The depth still to fill decides how that screed goes down.
Where there is space for insulation, the screed floats on it, about 65mm deep for a house. Most new extensions, heated or not, are built this way.
Where the slab already sits near finished height and only a small gap is left, a bonded screed of 25 to 40mm is fixed to the prepared concrete so the two work as one. Bonded screed costs £12 to £18 per m² (trade2base, June 2026) on the published 2026 UK figures.
Whichever applies, build the drying into the programme. Hand-laid sand and cement gives up its moisture more slowly than a liquid screed, about a day per millimetre over the first 40mm and slower after, so wood or vinyl on a 65mm floor waits several weeks. If the programme cannot stretch that far, ask about a sand and cement screed with rapid drying additives. Depths for each build-up are compared in our screed thickness guide.
