Holbrook kitchens and Horsham flats on liquid screed
Picture a rear extension on a Holbrook house, opened into the old kitchen to make one long room. Hand-laying sand and cement across that floor means bays, joints and a day or more of compacting. Pumped liquid screed fills it in one go, settles to a laser-set level and shrinks very little, so the floor needs far fewer joints.
Flatness is the other gain. Checked with a 2m straightedge it will normally make SR1 or SR2, the flatness that big tiles and LVT ask for. Depth is lower too: a floating liquid screed in a home can start at about 35mm on insulation, where sand and cement would need 65mm. On commercial floors the minimum is around 40mm.
Flats are the second fit. Purpose-built blocks account for 24% of Horsham homes, and on an upper floor the hose goes up the stairwell while the mixer stays on the street. Nobody carries sand up the stairs.
Newer houses are a smaller part of the town, with 17% built since 2000, and an extension to one of them still has to finish exactly level with the floor already in the house.
You can have it calcium sulphate or cement based. They go down identically through the hose, so we pick between them on the flooring you want and whether water could ever reach that room. To weigh it against the traditional mix, read our pumped versus hand-laid screed comparison.
Pump access and drying on Horsham streets
Our lorry and pump need a spot outside from which the hose will stretch to your room. On a drive that is simple. On a terrace, a flat or a street with no front parking, the plan needs agreeing in advance: where the mixer stops, how the hose runs through the house and how the floor is protected on the way.
Give us the address, the room position and any parking limits when you ask for a quote. If the room is on an upper floor, say how many flights the hose has to climb and whether there is a lift, a window it could pass through or a shared stair that other residents use, because each changes the set-up time. The screed pumping service page shows how a line is set out through a hallway or up a stairwell.
A day or two after pouring you can usually walk across it, though nobody should be laying flooring yet. Allow around one day per millimetre up to 40mm deep, and more for anything thicker. Force drying with underfloor heating can bring that down on calcium sulphate screed. Keep windows cracked open for airflow in the first weeks, and avoid covering the floor with plastic or stacked materials, which trap moisture.
