Crawley extensions and open-plan floors suited to liquid screed
Liquid screed is pumped as a fluid and levels itself, so a long kitchen extension or a knocked-through ground floor can be poured in one visit, with low shrinkage and few joints. Single storey rear extensions are a typical project on Crawley's New Town houses, and the new floor has to meet the original slab at the same height. Because liquid screed finds its own level, the finished height is set accurately before the pour and the result is flat enough for most finishes, with SR1 or SR2 readily achievable.
Depths are modest. In a house, the floating layer over insulation can be as little as about 35mm, and about 40mm in a commercial unit. Heated floors need 25mm or more of screed above the pipework, which puts the whole layer at around 45 to 50mm. Keeping it that shallow makes it easier to bring an extension floor level with the old house.
Flats make up 26% of Crawley's homes. In an upper floor flat, a pumped screed is often the practical answer because a hose can travel up a stairwell, while a hand-laid floor means carrying every load by bucket. Acoustic performance between floors matters in flats, so the screed is usually one layer in a build-up designed to stop sound reaching the flat below.
Two binders are used in liquid screed, calcium sulphate and cement. A specification calling for a CA grade means calcium sulphate flow screed in Crawley, which has its own page.
Parking the pump for a Crawley pour
The hose has to stretch from the mixer and pump to the room, so where those can stand matters first. A driveway or a site compound makes it easy. Where parking is on the street or in a shared bay, tell us when you ask for a price, along with the route from the kerb to the room, so the hose length and any traffic arrangements are sorted before the day. We use our own pump and crew, and we do not hire out pumps or machines; our screed pumping page explains how a pumped pour runs.
A day or two after the pour, usually 24 to 48 hours, people can walk on it and the kitchen fitter or plasterer can get back to work. Walkable and dry are different things, though. Before moisture sensitive flooring, allow about a day a millimetre up to 40mm deep, and slower going for the depth beyond. Depth and heating both change the wait, as our guide to screed drying times sets out.
On cost, 2026 UK rates have liquid screed from £24 up to £31 per m², and a contractor who bills the pump separately will add £300 to £600 a day. What we quote you is a fixed written figure, agreed before the pour.
