Where pumped screed suits Dorking homes
The wider and more open the room, the more sense a pumped pour makes. A rear extension knocked through to the old kitchen, a new garden-facing living space or a whole ground floor stripped back during renovation can all be poured in a single visit. The screed is pumped from the mixer, spread and dappled level, and needs no compaction by hand.
In Dorking, the interwar houses built on former Deepdene and Denbies estate land are typical candidates. They suit extensions with underfloor heating, and a heated extension floor is exactly the job this material was designed for.
The second argument for it is how flat it lies. Lay a 2m straightedge on the poured floor and SR1 or SR2 is well within reach, so whoever tiles or lays LVT afterwards starts on an even base. Because it barely shrinks, a large extension can be poured in big bays where a hand-laid floor would need a joint far more often.
Depth starts from about 35mm in a floating domestic floor, and from about 40mm in commercial work. Where pipes run underneath, at least 25mm has to sit over them, which puts a heated floor at around 45 to 50mm overall. Our screed thickness guide explains how that sits with the insulation.
You can choose a calcium sulphate mix or a cement one, and each suits different rooms. Seen a CA grade on your architect's drawings? Our Dorking anhydrite screed page decodes it. Where a room is small, awkward or will be wet, hand-laid screed is often the better choice.
Getting the pump to the room in Dorking
Every pour in Dorking begins out on the street. The mixer lorry and pump have to stand near your front door, and from there the hose is fed through the hall or along a side passage to the floor being poured. Terraced houses make up 21% of Dorking's homes, and on those streets there is rarely a driveway to use. At the quote stage, mention any yellow lines outside, a shared alley at the back and how the hose would reach the room, and we can plan around them well before pour day.
Upper floors are possible too. A hose can be run up a stairwell to reach a flat that is being rebuilt, provided the route and parking are agreed with the building's management beforehand and the common parts are protected.
Time on site is short. A typical domestic floor is poured in hours, and the room can be walked on within 24 to 48 hours. Getting it dry enough for a floor finish is the slow part: the first 40mm loses its water at something like a millimetre a day, and anything deeper dries more slowly again. If the screed is calcium sulphate and underfloor heating is fitted, the heating can usually be used to help it dry from about 7 days.
For builders who only need the pump and crew, our screed pumping service explains how that works. Our pumps and machines always come with our crew, never as plant hire. The same pumped service runs in nearby Leatherhead.
