Unit floors on Railton Road, Sunbeam Road and Triumph Way
When a unit on the Woburn Road Industrial Estate changes occupier, the floor can carry traces of the last one: painted bay markings, adhesive from an old office carpet, coating patches applied by someone else, or a worn top where forklift traffic has polished the surface. Before anything new is laid, those layers have to come off.
Diamond grinding does that by cutting the top of the slab away in thin passes. It takes off laitance, trowel marks, glue residue, paint and thin coatings, and it brings down the lips and ridges that form where two concrete bays meet. The result is an open, sound surface that a primer, levelling compound or screed can bond to properly. If the new occupier has a resin floor planned, we prepare the slab and the resin contractor follows; resin and polished concrete are not part of our work.
The large retail sheds at Interchange Retail Park on Kempston Road raise the same issue on a bigger scale. A shopfit often wants vinyl or tiles over concrete, and that bond starts with the preparation.
Large areas and heavy coatings change the method. Shot blasting or scarifying can strip a thick coating or a very large floor faster than a grinder, and our shot blasting and floor preparation service covers both. Where a slab is cracked or broken rather than just contaminated, concrete floor repair comes first.
Grinding in Kempston homes, garages and extensions
Grinding also has a place in houses, and in Kempston it tends to follow the projects the town's semis bring: kitchen extensions, garage conversions and open-plan remodels.
Garages first. A garage slab often has paint, oil staining and a dusty, weak top. Before it gets insulation, a membrane and a new screed, or before a thin compound goes straight onto it, grinding removes the contaminated layer so nothing is built on a poor surface. The garage conversion screed guide explains the full build-up.
Extensions second. Where a new extension slab meets the original floor of the house, the two rarely sit at exactly the same height. Grinding the higher edge, then feathering compound across the join, lets one covering run through.
Old coverings third. Lifting carpet or vinyl in an older Kempston house can leave glue that new compound will not hold onto. Grinding clears it before latex over a ground base or another compound goes down.
Just 7% of Kempston's homes were built from 2015 onwards, so most floors in the town are older concrete or screed that has already carried at least one covering. We measure screed depth before grinding, because taking too much off can leave it thinner than its minimum.
