Knock-throughs and extensions in Kempston's semis
An open-plan remodel often joins a new rear extension to the existing kitchen and dining room to make one open space. That creates two needs at once: a large, flat floor, and a finished height that lines up with the rest of the house.
Liquid screed answers both. Pumped through the house, it spreads and levels itself with no trowel work, and it reaches SR1 or SR2 without a struggle. It goes down thinner as well: floated over insulation in a house, about 35mm can be enough where sand and cement would want roughly 65mm. On a Kempston semi, that spare depth can be given to insulation under a floor that still has to meet the old threshold.
Low shrinkage is the other benefit. An open-plan floor in liquid screed needs far fewer joints than the same floor in sand and cement, so the finish can run through without breaks.
Newer homes suit it too. 17% of homes in Kempston were built from 2000 onwards, and houses of that age usually have insulated ground floors that take a flowing screed readily.
You can have it with a calcium sulphate binder or a cement one; which suits depends on the room and what goes on top. More on the calcium sulphate kind is under anhydrite flow screed in Kempston, and our guide weighing pumped against hand-laid screed sets the two methods side by side.
Pump set-up and drying in Kempston homes
The pump lorry parks outside, and the hose runs through a door to the room. A drive or front garden gives the mixer somewhere to stand. If there is none, or if parking outside is limited, say so when you ask for a price.
The hose also suits upper floors. 14% of Kempston homes are flats, and a pump can take screed up a stairwell without anyone carrying bags, which makes liquid screed practical above ground level.
Ahead of pouring, each room gets edging strip along the walls, a membrane with taped seams laid on the insulation, and a stop board across every doorway. On the day we check each of these.
Between 24 and 48 hours on, people can walk across it, but the floor coverings must still wait. Reckon on around a day for each of the first 40mm, longer for every millimetre past that, and keep windows open where you can to help it along. Our drying time guide goes into the detail.
