Matching a Flitwick extension floor with flowing screed
The screed is batched off site, sent through a hose and allowed to settle level by itself. You get a dense, flat surface with fewer joints than a hand-laid floor, and SR1 or SR2 is well within its range. One visit is enough for an entire extension floor.
In Flitwick, the challenge is usually the join. A single storey extension on a house built 30 to 50 years ago has to finish at the same level as the existing floor. The insulation thickness and screed depth are set out from that level, so the two floors meet with no step. Over insulation, a house floor needs about 35mm of liquid screed as a minimum; add heating pipes and 25mm must sit above them, bringing the total to 45 to 50mm.
Semi-detached houses make up 36% of the town's homes, and a rear extension on one of them, opened into the kitchen, is exactly the kind of long, open floor that suits a flowing screed.
New building is on a smaller scale. Only 15% of Flitwick's homes date from 2000 or later, so the usual setting is an existing house rather than a new plot. Where the drawings call for a set calcium sulphate grade, the testing afterwards is covered on Flitwick anhydrite screed. Liquid screed can be calcium sulphate or cement based, and any room likely to get wet takes the cement version.
Pump access and drying on Flitwick driveways
Our kit stays outdoors, normally on your drive or by the kerb, while the hose carries the screed inside. To get to a back extension it follows the side of the house or is run through indoors, and we sheet over floors and doorways it passes. A first floor room can be reached up the stairs or through a window.
Before we arrive, the edge strip and membrane should be in, the room weathertight, and doorways dammed. Keep the room shut up for a day or two once it is poured, then open windows to let moisture out. From 24 to 48 hours it will usually take foot traffic, though your new flooring has to wait until the screed has dried. A useful guide is a millimetre a day to 40mm, with each extra millimetre after that slower. There is more detail in our screed drying time guide.
None of our pumps or machines are available for hire. The screed pumping is carried out by our own team as part of the job. Kempston is 7.8 miles off, and its liquid screed page covers the same work there.
