Liquid Screed Contractors in Luton

Extensions, knocked-through kitchens, new homes and flats in Luton can all take a pumped liquid screed from us. Only 11% of Luton's homes have been built since 2000, so most pours go into existing houses, where the pump and hose have to reach a room at the back of a lived-in home. With the hose route sorted beforehand, even a big floor is poured in one go.

Where pumped liquid screed fits Luton's housing

In Luton the classic liquid screed job is a single storey addition on the back of a semi, where the new floor must meet the old kitchen floor dead level. Because liquid screed flows out and levels itself, it reaches that line across a wide area with very few joints, and surface regularity to SR1 or SR2 is readily achievable.

Open-plan kitchens are the next candidate. Knocking a kitchen and dining room together leaves one large floor, often with an old slab on one side and a new one on the other. A floating liquid screed laid over insulation, from about 35mm deep in a home, ties the two together as one surface.

Flats account for 23% of homes in the town, and larger apartment floors suit a pumped screed because the hose can climb a stairwell far more easily than barrows of mix can.

New building is coming too. Napier Park, on the former Vauxhall site, has outline permission for up to 625 homes alongside offices and industrial space. Once building starts there, the ground floor of each house could be pumped in a day.

Pumped screed for a Luton semi will be one of two mixes, calcium sulphate based or cement based. The choice hangs on what the room is used for and what you plan to lay over it, and our guide comparing liquid with sand and cement weighs them up. Pipes going in as well? Our Luton page on screeding over heating picks up from there.

Getting the pump to the room in Luton

A liquid screed pour is planned around the truck, the pump and the hose. Where a semi has a drive, the pump parks right by the front wall and the hose goes in through the side gate or the front door. Terraced roads usually mean the pump waits at the kerb instead. Mention permit bays, yellow lines or an alley shared with the neighbours when you first get in touch, and we will plan the day around them.

Upper floors are possible. For a first or second floor flat the hose can go up the communal stairs or in at a window, provided the way is kept clear and covered.

Our price includes the pump and the people running it. We never hire out pumps or other machines on their own. Hiring a pump yourself costs £300 to £600 a day on published figures before any screed is bought, so one price for supply and laying tends to work out simpler. How the kit works is explained under screed pumping.

After a day or two, so 24 to 48 hours, it will take your weight, yet a floor you can stand on may still be holding plenty of water. Allow around a day for each millimetre up to 40mm and longer for anything deeper, and open windows or a warmed heated floor will help it along. If you live in Dunstable, the same service is on our Dunstable liquid screed page.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Luton: your questions

How thick should liquid screed be in a Luton extension?

In a Luton extension, liquid screed floating on insulation starts at around 35mm deep. Put heating pipes in and you need 25mm or more above them, so the screed ends up roughly 45 to 50mm in total. The finished level normally has to meet the existing house floor, so we work the depth back from that line.

When can I walk on a new liquid screed?

People can normally walk on it carefully by the next day or the day after, 24 to 48 hours from pouring. Your tiler or flooring fitter will need to hold off for longer than that, though. Every millimetre takes roughly a day to give up its water up to 40mm, and deeper layers go slower again, so the date for LVT, wood or tiles hangs on depth, airflow and whether the heating can help.

Can liquid screed be pumped into an upstairs flat in Luton?

Yes. The hose needs an unbroken path from the pump outside to the flat, which usually means the shared staircase or an open window. When you ask for a price, say which floor the flat is on, whether the landings are narrow or there is a lift, and where outside the pump could park. We can then work out the hose route in advance rather than on the morning of the pour.
