Where a pumped screed pays off in Houghton Regis
Liquid screed earns its keep on big, open floors and on new construction.
On the new streets of Houghton Regis North and Bidwell West, ground floors are modern insulated slabs, and liquid screed over underfloor heating pipes is the usual specification. Being fluid, it closes in tight round each heating loop without leaving voids, finds its own level and comfortably makes SR1 or SR2. Its low shrinkage also means a big open-plan room on one of those plots can be poured with far fewer movement joints than hand-laid screed would need.
The post-war estates offer a different fit. Extensions to semis and terraces at Parkside and Tithe Farm are common, and where the new room opens into the existing kitchen the result is one wide floor. Pumping lays the old kitchen and the new extension together in one visit, so the other trades are not held up.
Flats are the third case. 12% of Houghton Regis homes are flats, and an upper floor is exactly where barrowing sand and cement up the stairs becomes slow. A pump hose simply follows the stairwell.
Depth is modest. Floated on insulation, a pumped floor can be about 35mm thick, while a hand-laid mix needs roughly 65mm. On a Parkside semi with a new back room, that thinner layer makes it easier to meet the existing kitchen doorway at the same height. Liquid screeds come as calcium sulphate or cement based mixes; the calcium sulphate grades have a page of their own, and our comparison of liquid and traditional screed weighs the two methods.
Getting the hose to the room on Houghton Regis streets
On pour day our pump stays outdoors and feeds a hose to the door closest to the room. A drive or a builder's compound gives it the easiest footing. If the lorry will be standing in the road outside a Parkside terrace, mention any parking limits or awkward bends when we price, so the hose route is worked out in advance. Indoors, the hose can follow a hall or climb a stairwell provided the way is kept clear and covered. Our screed pumping service covers pours where only the pumping is needed.
Three things must be in place first: perimeter edging around the walls, a membrane laid over the insulation with its joins taped, and a barrier at each doorway to hold the screed in the room. When our team turns up, they go round and confirm all three.
Then comes the wait. Feet on it by day two is fine; flooring on it by day two is not, because it is nowhere near dry yet. Plan on a day or so for each millimetre over the first 40mm, with every extra millimetre slower, and have the floor tested before any covering goes on. The screed drying guide explains what speeds drying up and what slows it down.
