Preparing stripped-out Reigate office slabs
Once the carpet tiles and old vinyl have gone, an office slab tells its history. There are bands of hard adhesive, painted lines from old partitions, sealer near the entrances, and ridges along the edges of the original concrete bays. None of that makes a reliable base for a new finish.
Diamond grinding works by shaving the surface away in very thin layers. Segments set into rotating heads cut through adhesive, paint and coatings, knock down ridges and trowel marks, and take off the weak laitance that can sit on top of a screed. The cut surface is open and clean, so primer soaks in and the next layer can bond properly.
Grinding is a surface process. It reduces local high points well, but it will not take the fall out of a floor that slopes or sags across a whole room, because the amount of concrete that would need removing is far too great. On a floor like that, the high spots are ground first and the remaining hollows filled with compound or a new screed. Our commercial screeding service covers the larger office jobs.
We should be clear about what we do not do. We are a contracting team: we do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling, and we do not lay resin or polished concrete. If a resin contractor is following us, we grind to the surface profile they ask for and leave the floor ready for them.
Extension joins in Woodhatch and garages across Reigate
In houses, the call for grinding is usually smaller and more specific. Knock-throughs at the back of the 1930s and 1950s houses in Woodhatch join a new extension slab to an older floor, and where the two meet there is often a lip of a few millimetres. Grinding that lip down, then feathering the join with compound in Reigate, lets LVT or engineered wood run straight through.
Garages are the other regular case, whether in South Park, Doversgreen or Mead Vale. A garage floor often carries oil, paint or a thin coating that has to come off before a membrane or a bonded layer is added.
Dust is taken seriously. Concrete, screed and tiles contain silica, and grinding them produces respirable crystalline silica dust. We grind only with extraction connected, and we close off the rest of the house with sheeting before starting.
We also watch the depth. A screed must keep its minimum thickness, and taking off too much leaves it weaker, so we grind only as far as the next layer needs. For large floors or thick coatings, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker; our floor preparation service explains both.
