Grinding workshop slabs at Holmethorpe Industrial Estate
A unit that has housed one business for years rarely hands over a floor ready for the next. Painted walkways, sealer, adhesive from old office partitions and raised lips where concrete bays were poured on different days all have to go before a new finish can bond.
Diamond grinding deals with that by cutting away the top of the slab in thin passes. Rotating heads fitted with diamond segments take down ridges and trowel marks, strip floor paint and thin coatings, and remove the weak surface layer known as laitance. What is left is an open, clean surface that primers and compounds can grip.
There is a limit worth knowing before booking. Grinding flattens local high spots, but it cannot correct a floor that slopes or dips across a wide area; trying to do so would mean cutting away far too much concrete. On a Holmethorpe or Kingsfield Business Centre slab with that problem, the high points are ground down first and the rest is brought true with levelling compound for Redhill floors or a new screed. Cracked, spalled or hollow sections are a matter for concrete floor repair before grinding finishes the surface.
We are a contracting team, not a hire shop. We do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling, and we do not lay resin or polished concrete, though we can prepare a floor for the firm that does. Retail units in the town centre, such as those in the Warwick Quadrant, follow the same sequence when a refit strips them back.
Dust control and home floors across Redhill
Grinding concrete, screed or tiles releases respirable crystalline silica, a fine dust that is harmful to breathe. We grind only with dust extraction connected to the machine, and in an occupied house we seal doorways and protect the rooms around the work.
In homes, grinding usually solves one of three problems. The first is the lip where a new extension slab meets the original floor of the house; post-war semis are commonly extended at the back, and semi-detached houses make up 29% of Redhill's homes. The second is a garage being converted, where oil stains, paint and a rough surface need taking off before membrane or levelling work. The third is old adhesive left behind once carpet or vinyl has been lifted.
Depth is the hidden risk. A screed has a minimum thickness, and grinding too much from it can leave it weaker than it should be, so we measure and grind only what the next layer needs.
For big floors or heavy coatings, shot blasting or scarifying can be quicker than grinding; see our floor preparation service. Whether you are in Redstone Hill, Coles Meads or Subrosa, the price comes back in writing within 24 hours.
