Smoothing old and new floors across Ringwood homes
Extensions, conservatory replacements and open plan kitchens all bring new floor areas up against old ones. In Poulner and the suburbs around the centre, the new screed has to tie into an older slab, and the two may finish a few millimetres apart. Take the wall out between them and the join becomes the middle of the room.
Levelling compound deals with this when the base is sound. Expect a layer between roughly 2mm and 10mm; a handful of products are designed to go deeper. We clean the floor, make good any defects and prime it with a product matched to what it is made of, sand and cement, concrete or calcium sulphate, and then pour and spread the compound.
The finish you need depends on the flooring. Many thin sheet finishes demand SR1, which allows up to 3mm under a 2m straightedge. Under the same BS 8204 test, SR2 permits 5mm and SR3 permits 10mm. LVT and large tiles are unforgiving of anything rougher.
Compound has limits. A floor that is out by a good deal more than about 10mm, or that sounds hollow or moves underfoot, will not hold a thick pour: it is liable to crack and part from the base. That calls for a fresh traditional sand and cement floor instead. For the thinnest corrections, latex screed compounds work at a few millimetres. We check each room with a 2m straightedge before pricing, so you know which areas compound can correct and which cannot.
Warehouse and office floors on Crow Arch Lane Industrial Estate
Crow Arch Lane Industrial Estate, reached from Castleman Way about a mile from the A31, includes steel-framed warehouses dating from the late 1970s. Floors in buildings of that age can be worn, dusty or uneven, and a new occupier fitting out offices, a trade counter or staff areas will usually want a flat surface before new flooring.
Preparation comes first. Worn or contaminated concrete can be ground back with concrete floor grinding, and damaged areas repaired, before compound is laid.
Nearby on Crow Lane, Platinum Jubilee Business Park is a newer 3.59 acre scheme of industrial and warehouse units with offices. New floors can still need levelling where office areas are finished with LVT or carpet tiles.
Shops and cafes at The Furlong face the same issue when they refit. Fast drying compounds keep downtime short, and larger areas can be phased so a business keeps trading. We agree the order of work, the drying time for the chosen compound and the handover date before we start, so the flooring contractor can follow straight on.
