Anhydrite grades for Weybridge houses and apartments
Calcium sulphate screeds are graded by strength. The designation gives compressive strength as a C number and flexural strength as an F number, both in N/mm2, under the European standard for screed materials. Lightly trodden domestic rooms can use CA-C20-F4. Houses, apartments and offices mostly get CA-C25-F5. Harder working floors are given CA-C30-F6.
For a St George's Hill house, the grade appears on the engineer's or architect's drawings, and nothing else goes in. Occasionally a designer picks an alpha hemihydrate product for speed or a slimmer floor. Depth, drying and the first warm-up then follow that maker's sheet, and so do we.
The material suits big floors because it barely shrinks as it sets. Large bays can be poured with few joints, which keeps an open ground floor looking continuous under stone or large tiles. Any joints that are required, say across a doorway or where two heating zones meet, are marked out ahead of pouring. In a block of flats, the screed floats on the acoustic layer with an edge strip at every wall, so it does not carry sound into the structure.
Flats are the other natural use. Some 30% of Weybridge homes are in purpose-built blocks, where anhydrite over acoustic insulation is a common floor build. For a plain introduction to the material, see what anhydrite screed is.
Sanding, testing and priming anhydrite in Weybridge
A poured anhydrite floor is not ready for flooring until three things are done.
The laitance comes off first. Drying anhydrite leaves a weak, powdery film over its surface. Tile adhesive or LVT glue on that skin can fail later, so it is sanded away once the floor is dry enough.
Then comes the moisture test. Flooring makers frequently hold calcium sulphate to a drier limit than cement, which means timber or vinyl can be ruled out at a reading tiles on cement would pass. Our hygrometer decides, and where a floor is heated, the system can normally hurry the drying from about day 7.
Last, the primer goes on. On a Weybridge floor, adhesive and compound only follow once a primer meant for calcium sulphate has gone down.
One more rule: keep anhydrite out of areas that may stay wet. In Weybridge houses, any shower room or wet room is poured with cement based flowing screed instead, or sand and cement shaped to falls by hand. Compare with our anhydrite screed in Woking.
