Whole heated ground floors on St George's Hill
On a large detached house, underfloor heating may run under the entire ground floor rather than one room. That changes the job. The pour is bigger, heating zones meet at doorways, and the screed has to perform evenly across all of it.
Start with how much screed sits above the pipes. Liquid and anhydrite screeds need 25mm minimum there, for a total depth of 45 to 50mm, while sand and cement needs roughly 45mm of cover by itself. On a whole floor, the thinner liquid build-up saves height and weight, and it flows fully round the pipes with no air pockets, which helps the system respond quickly.
Joints matter more on a big floor. Where heating zones meet, or where a bay would otherwise be very large, joints are planned before the pour so the screed can move as it warms and cools. Each zone's manifold and pipe layout comes from your heating engineer's drawing, and we set the joints to match it rather than guessing on the day.
Pipe laying sits with your heating engineer. We still inspect the insulation boards, the membrane and the edge strip before the pour, and bring any your builder has left out. For the grade and finishing of calcium sulphate, see anhydrite screed over heating. Heated liquid screed comes out at £20 per m² up to £35 on 2026 UK figures.
Retrofitting heating in older Weybridge homes
Putting heating into a house that was not built for it is the awkward version. In Weybridge, 31% of homes were built between 1945 and 1972, and in Oatlands many houses are older still. Floors in houses like these were not built with room for insulation, pipes and screed on top, so laying over the old floor can raise it past doors and stairs.
The cleaner route is usually to dig out the old floor and rebuild at the right level, with the heating inside. Where that is not possible, the thinnest compliant screed over the pipes keeps the rise to a minimum.
When you can switch on depends on what was poured. Anhydrite is generally ready for warmth at around 7 days, whereas sand and cement waits 21 days or longer. The water temperature is raised slowly over several days on the commissioning schedule, never switched straight to full.
New homes are no exception: 6% of Weybridge homes date from 2015 or later, and rushing commissioning on a new floor can crack it just the same. Read screed drying times explained, or compare the Walton-on-Thames heating screed page.
