Liquid screed for large St George's Hill floors
Detached houses are 28% of homes in Weybridge, and on the bigger plots a project can cover a whole ground floor. That is the job liquid screed is made for. One pour can cover hall, kitchen, living space and extension together, so the floor is level from room to room with no visible joins between batches.
Flatness is part of the reason. A flowing screed gets to SR1 or SR2 with little fuss, exactly what big format tiles and long engineered wood boards in a St George's Hill kitchen need. A hand-laid screed over the same area would take longer and more work to reach that standard.
On insulation in a house, roughly 35mm is the shallowest we go. Heating pipes push that up, because 25mm or more must cover them, and the layer usually totals 45 to 50mm. Since it surrounds every pipe and leaves no voids, the heat comes through sooner and more evenly. Shrinkage is low, and joints are far fewer than with sand and cement.
Two kinds of material are used. Calcium sulphate liquid screeds are common in heated homes, and cement based ones suit areas that may get wet or where a cement base is specified. If a specification names a grade, our anhydrite screed page for Weybridge covers the material side. For heated floors, see the depths and heat-up rules for screed over underfloor heating.
Getting the pump to Weybridge houses and flats
A liquid screed arrives by mixer lorry and goes in through a hose from a pump parked nearby. On large plots, the length of that hose is the first thing we measure, and drives, gates and planting along the route are protected. Where the run is long, the pump position is agreed before the day so the screed reaches the far room at the right consistency.
Newer homes are a straightforward fit. Some 18% of Weybridge homes were built since 2000, and houses of that age often have floors designed for a flowing screed in the first place.
Flats need a different plan, with the hose taken up a stair or through a window and acoustic layers and edge strips checked before the pour, so the new floor floats free of the walls.
Once poured, the screed is kept free of draughts at first and then ventilated. Plan the drying on a big floor carefully: for the first 40mm, budget 24 hours per millimetre of depth. Our screed pumping service explains the kit, and you can compare the same service on the Chertsey liquid screed page.
