Extensions and new builds in Whittlesey: where liquid screed fits
Of the homes in Whittlesey, 29% were built in 2000 or since. Newer houses like these, and the extensions added to older ones, are the natural home for a pumped screed. Large rooms, kitchen and family spaces opened into one, and ground floors with underfloor heating all benefit from a material that flows to a level surface on its own.
The flatness is readily achievable to SR1 or SR2, and the low shrinkage means far fewer joints than a hand-laid floor. That suits the long, uninterrupted runs of LVT, tiles or engineered wood common in an open plan layout.
Depth is modest. In a house, the floating layer over insulation starts at about 35mm, and grows to about 45 to 50mm where heating pipes run beneath the surface. When an extension floor has to meet the existing house exactly, that shallow build-up gives more room for insulation underneath.
There are two broad kinds of liquid screed: calcium sulphate and cement based. Both flow and self-level. The calcium sulphate kind has its own grades, drying and sanding rules, explained on our Whittlesey anhydrite page, while cement based flowing screed is the one to use where a floor may get wet.
Purpose-built flats are only 7% of homes here, so most liquid screed here is likely to go on ground floors of houses rather than upper floors in blocks. That makes pump access mainly a question of drives and streets.
Positioning the pump at a Whittlesey house
We bring the mixer lorry and pump as near to your house as the road allows, then run a hose indoors to the room being poured. Plenty of Whittlesey homes are detached, and where yours has a drive the lorry can usually pull onto it, with the hose going in by the side gate or front door. Where a house has no drive, the kerb may be the only option, so tell us about parking or narrow access when you ask for a price.
The route through the house is protected before the pour starts, and the whole floor is poured in one visit. Our own crew carries out every pour; pumps and machines are never hired out.
In 2026 UK pricing, liquid screed comes in at £24 to £31 per m², and where your job lands depends on the floor area, the depth and how easy access is. Drying still takes time after the floor is walkable: about a day per millimetre for the first 40mm, then slower. For the difference between this and hand laying, read liquid screed vs sand and cement. The same service covers liquid screed in Peterborough, six miles west.
