Flats, Fletton Quays and liquid screed in Peterborough
Upper floors are where a pump changes the job. A sand and cement screed on a second floor means carrying tonnes of material up the stairs. A liquid screed goes up through a hose, and the floor is done in hours, with no heavy loads carried through a shared stairwell or lift.
Fletton Quays, on the river, brings 350 apartments and new offices to the city centre. On upper floors in schemes of that kind, a flowing screed can be pumped over acoustic insulation without loading the stairs.
New houses suit it too. Since 2015, Peterborough has added about 12% of its present homes. Where a new ground floor has insulation down and heating pipes fixed, a flowing screed fills around them in a single pour.
In a house, liquid screed pays off across open spaces. A floating floor starts at about 35mm, around half the depth of a traditional screed, so it helps where the new floor must meet an old threshold. It reaches SR1 or SR2 flatness readily and needs few joints, because it barely shrinks.
Liquid screed splits into a cement based type and a calcium sulphate type. Both flow and self-level; they differ in where they can go and how they are finished. The calcium sulphate flow screed page goes into that material in detail, including grades and sanding.
Pumping to houses in Hampton and the Ortons
Outside sits the mixer truck with its pump; from there a hose threads indoors as far as the room getting the pour. Where a house in Hampton or the Ortons has a drive, the pump can usually sit right by the front door. On a narrow street, it may need a space at the kerb, so mention any parking rules when you enquire.
The hose can run through a hall, up a stair or across a garden, but the route has to be clear, and floors and walls along it should be protected.
Ahead of pouring, each wall is lined with edge strip, the insulation is sheeted with taped polythene, and every doorway is closed off with a dam. We check all of it first.
For a couple of days after pouring, shut the door on that room and stop any draughts getting in. After that, ventilation helps it dry. How long it takes before flooring is covered in our guide to screed drying times. If the choice is still open, compare liquid and sand and cement side by side.
