Where pumped screed fits St Ives houses
Just 13% of homes in St Ives date from 2000 or later. So liquid screed in this town mostly goes into additions to existing houses, not whole new estates. Picture a single storey room built on behind an older semi, or a kitchen knocked through to the dining room: a broad floor with little in the way. A pumped screed suits that shape. The hose gets to the far corner, the screed levels itself, and an SR1 or SR2 surface is well within reach.
How deep it goes depends on the base. Laid floating over insulation in a home, liquid screed begins at about 35mm, and over heating pipes the whole layer is normally 45 to 50mm. Keeping the build-up that thin is a real help when the new floor has to meet the old one with no step.
You can have it as a calcium sulphate or a cement based mix. Both pour and settle flat, and the right one depends on the room and its finish. Our CA grades and anhydrite page deals with the calcium sulphate type in detail.
Of all homes in St Ives, 11% are in purpose-built blocks of flats. A hose can be run up a communal stair with far less fuss than carrying barrow loads of sand and cement, so upper floors in those blocks are a natural fit.
As a rough rule, the first 40mm dries at about a day for each millimetre, and anything deeper takes longer. A 50mm floor therefore needs some weeks before tiles or boards can go on, and our guide to screed drying times gives realistic figures.
Getting the pump to the room in St Ives
A liquid pour arrives as a mixer truck feeding a pump, with a hose run to the room. For a detached or semi-detached house with a drive, the truck and pump sit off the road and the hose goes through the side gate or the front door. On a narrower street, the pump may have to stand at the kerb, so tell us about parking restrictions, bus routes or shared access when you ask for a price.
The hose can run a fair distance, through a house and out to a rear extension, and up to an upper floor. We protect the route through the house and plan it so the pour finishes in one visit. We do not hire out pumps or machines, so the whole pour is carried out by our own team.
On new plots such as those off Houghton Road, the question is sequence rather than access: the pour waits until the plot is weathertight and any pipes are tested. If you are comparing prices nearby, see our page on liquid screed in Huntingdon, about 4.7 miles away.
